A large pathology department in Leeds is seeking a Trainee Biomedical Scientist to work within a hub laboratory. The successful candidate will gain experience in biochemistry assays and support the transition to a new hub laboratory. Candidates must demonstrate laboratory experience and have relevant education in healthcare science. Fulltime roles are available, and support for registration will be provided.
Thisis an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in thecountry, and in advance of moving to our new £30m Pathology building (on theSt. Jamess University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (onthe Leeds General Infirmary site) Spring 2025. The Department of BloodSciences is seeking to recruit experienced and innovative BiomedicalScientist in Biochemistry to help shape, deliver and improve the service wedeliver to our patients.
Thesuccessful candidate will work within a large hub laboratory, serving bothLeeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community. This includes the regionalOncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital, which is a uniqueopportunity for the successful candidate to gain experience in wide range ofbiochemistry assays. In Summer 2025, the successful candidate will beinvolved in the exciting transition to our new, purpose-built hub laboratoryat St. Jamess University Hospital.
Tobe considered for this Biomedical Scientist position in Biochemistry, youmust be registered with the HCPC or working towards HCPC registration andhave demonstrable laboratory experience, along with a keen interest in thescientific field of Biochemistry. Relevant training and support will beprovided for the successful candidate, including (subject to an applicationprocess) support to complete an IBMS Registration/Specialist Portfolio.

OurPathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals inthe Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million andprovide services both regionally and nationally. In addition to the newlaboratory projects, we are also working to deploy a new Managed PathologyService Contract. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospital is alsoplanned for the future, which will include all in-patient maternity andspecialist neonatal services to become the largest single site maternitycentre in the UK.
Thesuccessful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific andclinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 andby the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry andHaematology.

Aspart of the departmental team, you will be expected to perform a range ofroutine and more complex investigations under the supervision of registeredand experienced biomedical scientists. Working in different sections of thedepartment you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to contributetowards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. Workingunder supervision you will be expected to apply professional judgements andspecialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations,often under pressure, as part of the team. You will be required tocommunicate information, often related to patient management and care, tocolleagues, healthcare staff and other organizations.
