Job Description:

The Scottish Ambulance Service is at the frontline of the NHS in Scotland, responding to over 600,000 emergency calls a year. We provide an emergency Ambulance Service to a population of over 5 million people across mainland and island communities.

We are committed to developing a workforce capable of delivering high-quality, clinical, person-centred care, aligned with Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Quality Strategy.

The role of Advanced Practitioner offers an excellent opportunity for career development within a clinical role. We are currently accepting applications for Paramedics to undertake the role of Trainee Advanced Practitioner (Urgent & Primary Care).

This role involves being part of our growing team of Advanced Practitioners within SAS, building upon the success of the Advanced Practice programme.

Advanced Practitioners (AP) in Urgent & Primary Care provide high-level, independent decision-making, including assessment, diagnosis, management, and treatment, including prescribing, of patients with complex needs. They work within a rotational model, engaging in multidisciplinary teams in primary care and Out of Hours services, providing virtual consultations, professional support, and response on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

APs possess broad knowledge, critical thinking skills, and clinical expertise, supported by a scope of practice beyond standard paramedic registration. They contribute to service-wide audit, research, training, and education.

Applicants must be HCPC registered Paramedics and eligible for the PGDip Advanced Practice programme. A significant level of clinical practice within primary/urgent/emergency care is required.

Successful applicants not already qualified will undertake a fully funded Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Practice, including non-medical prescribing, over approximately 30 months.

All APs are part of the Scottish Ambulance Service response and need a full UK manual driving licence and must pass the FutureQuals Emergency Response Driver Training, which the service can provide if needed.

Applicants should review all supporting documentation before applying. The reflective learning statement must be completed as per the provided guidance.

Paramedics need support from their current line managers to apply.

Applicants must demonstrate how they meet the criteria outlined in the person specification.

Candidates requiring training will be appointed as Trainee Advanced Practitioners and paid accordingly during training, progressing to full Band 7 upon completion of the programme.

The AP Urgent and Primary Care roles are rostered positions with built-in relief weeks, subject to variation during training.

Shortlisted candidates will undertake an assessment day, with details provided beforehand. External applicants must pass a fitness test before the assessment.

Interviews are scheduled for 3rd and 5th June 2025.

Further information, including application process and training details, is available in the Application Pack TAPUPC document. Drop-in sessions will be held via Teams on 6th and 13th May 2025, and attendance can be confirmed via provided links.
