Job summary

North Yorkshire Council is seeking a Traffic Management and Road Safety Engineer in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. The role combines site visits across the county with remote work from home and monthly meetings at the Northallerton office.

You will develop Local Safety and Collision Prevention Schemes, undertake Road Safety Audits and Fatal Collision Inspections, and support traffic signal improvements and parking projects.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of traffic signs, lines and traffic calming legislation.
  • Experience in collision investigation studies and safety schemes including traffic calming.
  • Experience in preparation or participation of Road Safety Audits.
  • Understanding of Traffic Regulation Order procedures.
  • Experience in highways related roles.
  • Full driving licence due to travel requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and consult on the design of schemes within the Integrated Transport Capital Programme, including road safety, traffic management and parking studies.
  • Prepare traffic sign design and schedules and ensure schemes comply with Local Transport Plan and supporting documents.
  • Produce/update traffic management and road safety engineering policy.
  • Draft Speed Limit Traffic Regulation Orders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
  • Liaise with Legal Services to ensure orders are sealed and compliant.
  • Organise replacement street nameplates with manufacturers and contractors.

Hybrid: work from home with travel across the county for site visits, and monthly meetings at our Northallerton office.

Our Service

Our Traffic Engineering team deliver capital-funded local safety schemes to reduce the number and severity of casualties arising from road collisions, undertake road safety audits on highway improvements, and carry out fatal collision inspections and reports.

We also produce and update traffic management and road safety engineering policy, improve the efficiency of traffic signal installations in North Yorkshire by addressing congestion and safety issues at problem locations, maintain and improve the condition of existing traffic signal installations, and monitor the performance of the traffic signals maintenance contractor.

We also provide parking expertise and lead on the delivery of high-profile parking projects. Responsibilities also include a countywide review of speed limits and the maintenance of street nameplates.

The Role

As our Traffic Management and Road Safety Engineer you will identify and develop Local Safety and Collision Prevention Schemes, undertake Road Safety Audits and Fatal Collision Inspections.

Your main responsibilities will be:

What you will bring
  • A working knowledge of legislation relating to traffic signs and lines and traffic calming
  • Experience in collision investigation studies and safety schemes including traffic calming
  • Experience in the preparation or participation of Road Safety Audits
  • Understanding of Traffic Regulation Order Procedures
  • Experience within a highways related role
  • Experience using ACAD and other ICT applications
  • An understanding of local government administrative and financial procedures
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical and organisational skills

Due to the nature of this role, regular travel is expected, so you will need a full driving licence.
