Our Trading Standards Professional Level 6 apprenticeship consists of a 41-month long opportunity to build on your organisational and communication skills, develop the skills and knowledge required for the role by working with staff across the Council to help us achieve our vision to make Hammersmith & Fulham one the most inclusive boroughs in the country and apply your ‘can-do’ attitude whilst working towards a Level 6 Trading Standards Professional qualification.

You will complete the apprenticeship, enhancing your abilities and helping you progress in your career.

The Job

Working in the Trading Standards team for the Council you will:

  1. Assist with inspections, projects, investigations, meetings, and complaints.
  2. Handle evidence, records, and data with confidentiality and integrity.
  3. Conduct research and produce reports to aid investigations.
  4. Take samples/test purchases of foods, consumer goods, such as toys, cosmetics, vapes, tobacco and electrical items, or jewellery and alcohol, to have them checked against legal standards.
  5. Work with partners to protect consumers and businesses from fraud and scams and interrupting doorstep rogue traders.
  6. Investigate rogue traders, prepare criminal cases, and give evidence in court.
  7. Provide business support services and general administrative duties.
  8. Participate in meetings, training, and seminars to improve communication.

An enhanced DBS check is required for council officers who visit residents’ homes or work regularly with children.

Training and Development

Within your role you will:

  1. Complete a Trading Standards Professional Level 6 apprenticeship fully funded by the Council. This will involve completing tasks and studies in the workplace, or as per course requirements.
  2. Join a personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your time with the Council.

Moving on

After you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship, you will qualify as a Trading Standards Officer capable of working across the full spectrum of disciplines, covering environmental protection, fair trading, product safety, consumer protection and weights and measures. Finding work either within the Council or with another employer. You will have networked across the Council and be aware of the internal job market during your time with us and we will provide support on your approach to the wider job market as part of your development programme.

  1. This job advert is open to everyone, with priority given to residents and care experienced young people aged 16+ who has lived in the UK.
  2. Have lived in the UK for the past 3 years (as part of the funding requirement).
  3. Not currently be qualified in Trading Standards Professional Level 6 or above.
  4. Currently not undertaking any other formal form of study (e.g. college or university course).
