Job description

As an Analyst on the Shell Naphtha Trading Desk, you will directly support the execution and optimisation of Shell’s European chemical feedstocks trading strategy. Operating across a complex and dynamic supply chain—including refineries, crackers, terminals, pipelines, and third-party partners—you will be empowered to make commercial decisions under the guidance of the senior traders that deliver value and manage risk. While collaboration remains important, this role prioritises self-direction and entrepreneurial thinking.

Key Responsibilities

Trading Support & Execution

  • Support senior traders in developing and executing physical and paper trade ideas across the European naphtha portfolio.
  • Monitor market developments and contribute to timely, informed decision-making.
  • Assist in the negotiation of spot and term physical deals with third parties and brokers.
  • Maintain accurate trading documentation and ensure timely deal capture in trading systems.

Asset Performance

  • Collaborate with product optimisers to help ensure efficient supply chain performance across five refineries, two steam crackers, two blending terminals, pipelines, and third-party contracts.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the Naphtha Make-Buy-Blend (MBB) model, supporting feasibility assessments and margin optimisation through volumetric, timing, grade, and blending strategies.

Commercial Analysis

  • Conduct market, pricing, and margin analysis to support both short-term and long-term trading strategies.
  • Maintain and update the regional Supply/Demand model, working closely with analytics teams in the US and East to inform European strategy.
  • Evaluate netback economics and arbitrage opportunities across Shell and third-party assets.
  • Track and report exposure and P&L movements to support risk and performance visibility.

Deal Structuring & Negotiation

  • Assist in structuring spot and term deals with third parties.
  • Liaise with legal and contracts teams to ensure compliance and commercial alignment.
  • Participate in internal reviews and due diligence for new trading opportunities.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a key point of contact for internal stakeholders across Manufacturing, Chemicals, and Supply.
  • Coordinate with operations, scheduling, and logistics teams to support smooth trade execution.
  • Help maintain relationships with external counterparties, brokers, and logistics providers.
  • Collaborate with freight, gasoline, paper, and crude trading teams to support cross-barrel optimisation.

Compliance & Risk

  • Ensure all activities comply with Shell’s HSSE and regulatory standards.
  • Support risk management processes including hedge execution and exposure reporting.

Requirements

  • A degree in Engineering, Economics, Business, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
  • A commercial mindset and genuine interest in commodity markets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Excel; experience with trading systems (e.g., FED/DEX/Endur) is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel within Europe occasionally.
  • Previous experience in Trading Operations (T&S) and/or Refinery Processing (Manufacturing) is advantageous.

What We Offer

  • A front-row seat to Shell’s high-value trading environment, with exposure to real-time commercial decision-making.
  • Mentorship and development from experienced traders and commercial leaders.
  • A clear and supported pathway into trading or optimisation roles for those who demonstrate strong performance, initiative, and commercial acumen.
  • A collaborative and inclusive team culture that values learning, curiosity, and growth.
