The Import Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the seamless and compliant importation of medical devices and safety equipment into the U.S. and Canada. This role is responsible for adhering to regulatory requirements set forth by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), while also ensuring efficient and accurate documentation, tariff classification, and customs clearance. The Import Specialist will collaborate with internal teams, customs brokers, and logistics partners to ensure timely delivery, resolve import-related issues, and support Draeger's commitment to quality and compliance. This position also plays a key role in maximizing cost efficiencies through trade agreements such as USMCA, duty mitigation, and drawback programs, while maintaining audit-ready records for internal and external compliance audits.
In this role you will:
- Ensure full compliance with U.S. and Canadian import regulations (CBP and CBSA) by maintaining accurate and complete documentation-such as commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and entry summaries-and by using ERP and trade compliance systems (e.g., SAP GTS) to manage import data and generate compliance reports.
- Coordinate with customs brokers and internal cross functional teams to facilitate timely and accurate clearance of inbound shipments, resolving any customs holds or compliance issues as they arise.
- Accurately classify goods using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS and HS codes for Canada) and ensure proper valuation for duties, taxes, and recordkeeping.
- Manage and verify country of origin documentation, support qualification for trade agreements like USMCA and other Free Trade Agreements, and maintain proper traceability and records to support claims for both Make and Buy Parts.
- Support or lead initiatives to recover duties and participate in duty mitigation programs, including drawback filings and reconciliation activities.
- Maintain audit-ready records and provide support during internal or external audits, ensuring transparency and traceability in all import activities. The Import Specialist should also be able to independently conduct audits on monthly entry data sets to identify discrepancies and ensure ongoing compliance.
- Monitor and manage import bonds, licenses, and permits to ensure they are active, compliant, and appropriately sized for transaction volumes.
- Performs other duties as needed and assigned.
Your QualificationsEducation:
Bachelor's degree in related discipline strongly preferred; comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
Related Experience:
- Minimum job-related professional experience: 3-5 years
- Previous experience in import trade compliance, preferably working as the Importer of Record (IoR) with exposure to both U.S. and Canadian regulations.
- Familiarity with SAP GTS and trade compliance tools.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Special Competencies or Certifications:
- Strong understanding of customs regulations, import documentation, and HS classification.
- Industry and technical knowledge of medical equipment and/or safety products a plus.
- Trade compliance certifications or licenses (e.g., CCS).
- Experience with USMCA or other free trade agreements is preferred.
- Strong oral and written communication skills are a must.
