Job Opportunity: Mechanical Workshop Technicians (Specialist Technicians)

We are seeking two skilled and motivated Tool Room Machinists to join our team as Mechanical Workshop Technicians, also known internally as Specialist Technicians. This role provides an exciting chance to contribute to cutting-edge projects within the Faculty of Science & Engineering at the University of Bristol.

Depending on your skills, experience, and knowledge, this position will be classified as either a Level 1 (Grade G - £30,505 - £34,866 per annum) or Level 2 (Grade H - £33,882 - £39,105 per annum).

Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with key stakeholders, such as Principal Investigators, to provide specialist workshop services and develop project concepts and plans.
  2. Operate, service, maintain, and calibrate workshop equipment, including CNC and manual machine tools, hand tools, and other specialist equipment.
  3. Diagnose and resolve complex engineering problems and workshop tool issues, providing both short-term and long-term solutions.
  4. Maintain accurate records and drawings; analyze and interpret project requirements, and iterate designs and implementations as necessary.
  5. Train colleagues and users in specialist techniques, processes, and procedures as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Level 1 Technician:

  • Experience in engineering workshop practices, including milling, turning, and fitting, with a practical understanding of design tools, manufacturing processes, and safety protocols.
  • Basic proficiency in relevant software such as CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • A passion for engineering principles and the ability to advise and support research staff and students.

Level 2 Technician:

  • Extensive experience in engineering workshop practices, including milling, turning, and fitting, with a strong grasp of design tools, manufacturing, and safety standards.
  • Proficiency in CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • Ability to guide and assist both expert and novice users, including research staff and students, in engineering principles and applications.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Experience as a tool room machinist, including milling, grinding, and turning.
  • Experience in tool-making, manual machining, and CNC operations.
  • Completion of a mechanical apprenticeship (desirable).
