Job description

An exciting opportunity has emerged for two skilled and motivated Tool Room Machinists to join our team as Mechanical Workshop Technicians (internally referred to as a Specialist Technician). This role offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge projects within the Faculty of Science & Engineering at the University of Bristol.

Depending on your skills, experience, and knowledge, this position will be designated as either a Level 1 (Grade G - £30,505 - £34,866 per annum) or Level 2 (Grade H - £33,882 - £39,105 per annum) Specialist Technician.

The role

We are seeking two skilled Tool Room Machinists to join as Mechanical Workshop Technicians, contributing to innovative projects at the University of Bristol's Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Positions are classified as Level 1 or Level 2 based on experience and expertise, with corresponding salary grades.

What will you be doing?
  1. Collaborating with stakeholders such as Principle Investigators to provide specialized workshop services, developing concepts and plans.
  2. Operating, maintaining, and calibrating workshop equipment, including CNC and manual machine tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment.
  3. Diagnosing and resolving complex engineering problems and issues with workshop tools.
  4. Maintaining accurate records and drawings; analyzing project requirements and iterating designs as needed.
  5. Training colleagues and students in specialist techniques and procedures.
Level 1 Technician:
  • Experience with engineering workshop practices, including milling, turning, and fitting, along with knowledge of design tools, manufacturing processes, and safety protocols.
  • Basic skills in CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • Strong interest in engineering principles and ability to support research staff and students.
Level 2 Technician:
  • Extensive experience in engineering workshop practices, with a strong grasp of design tools, manufacturing processes, and safety standards.
  • Proficient in CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • Ability to guide and assist both experienced and novice users, including research staff and students.
