Role Description - To manufacture, maintain, modify, and repair precision tooling, jigs, fixtures, machine components, and production equipment using conventional machining techniques. Support manufacturing by keeping tooling and equipment accurate, reliable, and to quality standards.
Main Duties -
- Set up and operate manual milling, turning, grinding, drilling, and other toolroom machinery safely and efficiently
- Manufacture precision components from engineering drawings, sketches, and specifications
- Carry out repairs, modifications, and maintenance of production tooling, dies, jigs, fixtures, and machine parts
- Produce one-off and small batch components to tight tolerances
- Support Production and Press Shop departments by responding promptly to tooling and engineering requirements
- Inspect completed work using precision measuring equipment to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards
- Assist with planned preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs when required
- Work closely with supervisors and engineers to plan workloads and prioritise urgent tasks
- Maintain accurate records of work completed and materials used
- Ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained within the toolroom
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving productivity, efficiency, and quality
- Undertake additional duties within the Works Engineering Department as required
General -
- Assist in the maintenance of good housekeeping and follow the ideology and concept of the 5s principles
- Be aware of all aspects of the Employee Handbook and accept your responsibilities within the organisation
- Always use the protective equipment provided
- Make every effort to achieve the production times allowed
- Adhere to all company Health & Safety, Quality, and Environmental procedures
- Liaise with Team Leader/Manager regarding any work-related issues
- Be responsible for any equipment under your control and report any defects to your manager
- Requisition tools and materials where applicable and gain authorisation from your Team Leader/Manager
- Where possible offer “opportunities for improvement” to your Team Leader/Manager
- Be aware of the Company’s Quality Policy Statement and relevant procedures
- Assist your Team Leader/Manager in any other special work duties that may be required
- Time-served apprenticeship or recognised engineering qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Machining, or Toolmaking
- Proven experience working within a manufacturing toolroom environment
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Experience operating manual milling machines, centre lathes, surface grinders, and pedestal drills
- Competent in the use of precision measuring equipment, including micrometres, verniers, dial indicators, and gauges
- Knowledge of engineering materials, machining processes, and tooling applications
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Flexible approach to working hours to support operational requirements
- Experience within a press tooling or metal forming environment
- Basic welding and fabrication skills
- CNC machining knowledge and programming experience
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance systems
- Forklift Truck Licence (or willingness to obtain)
