University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Thoracic Nurse Practitioner to join the Thoracic Nurse case manager team on a permanent basis.

You will work as an independent practitioner under supervision, conducting competency‑based patient assessments and formulating management plans for Thoracic surgery patients, including pre-operative work and potential complications. The role requires flexibility and strong communication to support patients and MDTs.

Qualifications

  • Registered nurse on NMC or HCPC register.
  • Level 7 Post Grad Cert (Min 60 Credits) or Master’s degree in relevant specialty.
  • Specialist training/qualification in area of practice.
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice.

Responsibilities

  • You will work as an independent practitioner under supervision of Thoracic surgery Nurse case managers or DMP.
  • Undertake competency based patient assessment and examination to formulate a management plan for sections of patients admitted for diagnosis or treatment.
  • Carry out preparatory work prior to treatment or diagnosis, including consent and investigations, and highlight potential complications.

About The Team

The thoracic nurse practitioners provide a pre-operative assessment service for patients undergoing Thoracic surgery and provide psychological support for patients diagnosed with cancer from pre-operative diagnosis.
The nurse practitioners liaise closely with lung nurse specialists, Consultant surgeons, Anaesthetist and MDT teams across the regions to ensure quality care throughout the whole of the patients’ journey.

What You’ll Do

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will work as an independent Practitioner under the supervision of the Thoracic surgery Nurse case managers or Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP)
You will undertake competency based patient assessment and examination in order to formulate a management plan for specific groups of patients admitted to UHS for diagnosis and / or treatments.
You will be expected to undertake all preparatory work prior to the patient undergoing treatment or diagnosis which may include consent, request of any further investigations and to highlight any potential complications to the Thoracic surgery Nurse case managers or relevant medical colleague.


What We’re Looking For

The post holder will ideally have experience of supporting patients with Cardiovascular & Thoracic disease within primary or secondary care. They will need to be adaptable and flexible and work in varied environments across organisational boundaries.
You will require a flexible approach to working patterns and will be required to work to a rota.
As a Nurse Practitioner within the Thoracic team you will be expected to have excellent communication skills, promote the delivery of a high standard of patient-centered care and work between organisational boundaries.
You will be expected to work across divisions. You will analyse, monitor and implement actions that ensure the service delivery is safe and effective in line with the Trust values with the support of your colleagues and line manager.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria


  • Registered nurse, Registered AHP on relevant part of NMC or HCPC register

  • Level 7 Post Grad Cert (Min 60 Credits) or Master’s degree or equivalence within relevant speciality

  • Specialist training / Qualification in area of practice

  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Provide evidence of supporting a range of learners in practice

  • Specialist clinical skills and experience within specialist area

  • Evidence of policy development and implementation

  • Evidence of change Management, leadership and innovation

  • Evidenced based care philosophy

  • Clinical experience at Band 6 or equivalent within relevant speciality

  • Counselling / advanced communication skills qualification / training

  • Leadership Qualification / training

  • Development / use of integrated patient care pathways

  • Experience of practitioner led care / clinics in own practice

  • Team leadership role
