Job description

At Tata Technologies we make product development dreams a reality by designing, engineering and validating the products of tomorrow for the world's leading manufacturers. Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Thermal CFD Engineer to be based at our customers site in Gaydon.

Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast-growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers. It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery.

The Role:

We are seeking a Thermal CFD Engineer - eMotors to lead thermal and fluid flow analysis of high-performance automotive eMotor systems. This role supports the design and optimization of active and passive cooling systems to maintain high power and torque density while ensuring thermal reliability. The engineer will work under the guidance of the Head of eMotor Design, developing CFD and thermal FEA models, collaborating with electromagnetic and mechanical design teams, and contributing to the delivery of thermally optimized eMotor systems. This role may also extend to inverter cooling analysis as part of the broader project scope.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning

  • Define simulation strategies addressing thermal and fluid flow challenges in high-performance eMotors.
  • Collaborate with E-Mag and Mechanical Design teams to establish accurate boundary conditions and drive cycle profiles.
  • Develop a thermal simulation roadmap aligned with eMotor design and release milestones.
  • Identify thermal risks early in the design phase and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Forecast simulation workload and adapt plans as design requirements evolve based on test feedback.
Execution

  • Design and optimize active and passive cooling systems to meet performance and durability targets.
  • Develop and maintain CFD models to analyze coolant flow and calculate heat transfer coefficients for critical components, including:
    • Wound Stator Assemblies
    • Rotors
    • Bearings
  • Create and own thermal FEA models to assess temperature distribution across components under various drive cycles.
  • Work closely with E-Mag engineers to ensure accurate thermal boundary conditions and load inputs.
  • Identify areas for thermal performance improvement and collaborate with design teams to implement optimized solutions.
  • Present multiple cooling system design options, enabling trade-offs between thermal performance, packaging, and cost.
  • Support potential inverter cooling analysis as part of the broader thermal work package.
  • Execute and validate simulation results using industry-standard tools (software open for discussion).
Key Deliverables

The Thermal/CFD Support Engineer will be responsible for robust thermal validation of eMotor systems, with the following outcomes:
  • Deliver CFD and thermal FEA models for all critical eMotor components.
  • Generate detailed thermal analysis reports, including:
    • Flow visualization
    • Heat transfer coefficients
    • Temperature distribution
    • Design recommendations
  • Ensure optimized cooling system designs that meet thermal performance targets.
  • Validate simulation findings against physical test data, where applicable.
  • Support engineering gateway reviews with thermal insights and documentation.
  • Contribute to DFMEAs and assist in resolving thermal concerns via eCMS.
  • Support redesign activities in 2026 and 2027 based on test feedback and program evolution.
In return for bringing your expertise to our business we offer a competitive salary along with excellent benefits including:
• Pension Scheme - We match employee contribution up to 5% of salary
• 25 Days' Holiday
• Private Health Care
• Tata Jaguar Land Rover Privilege Scheme - up to 20% off new JLR vehicles
• Group Income Protection
• Health Assured - Employee Assistance Program
• Group Life Assurance
• Health Shield - Private Health Cash Plan
