Therapeutic Radiographer Apprentice

The closing date is 23 October 2025

To work within the Radiotherapy department under the Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship programme, committing to train as a therapeutic radiographer meeting the clinical and academic requirements of the course.

The post holder will work alongside the multidisciplinary team whilst they train to be a therapeutic radiographer under the supervision of a registered practitioner. The post holder will be required to work shifts as required by the department.

The apprenticeship will run in conjunction with a higher education faculty (e.g. Sheffield Hallam University) and attendance of training is essential so annual leave must be arranged outside these sessions. The post holder is required to study alongside working in the department and the successful candidate must be prepared to undertake any formal and informal study and training required to fulfil the needs of the post. There will be 20% protected study time (equivalent to 1 day per week).

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship the post holder will gain a BSc (Hons) in Therapeutic radiography and will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Therapeutic Radiographer.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Job responsibilities
  • To perform a range of radiotherapy duties and procedures, as detailed within the apprenticeship programme, within the Radiotherapy department under the supervision of a qualified therapeutic radiographer at all times.
  • To ensure that the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, IRMER 2017 and associated codes of practice and guidance notes together with the Health and Safety at Work Act are understood and adhered to in respect of staff, patients and members of the public.
  • Work within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to the UHCW Radiation Safety Policy and national and local standard operating procedures/protocols.
  • To assist in the daily workload of the department, liaising with portering service, administration staff and other members of the MDT to facilitate the co-ordination of patient appointments.
  • To ensure that clerical and administrative duties are completed, in compliance with department protocols.
  • To identify the patient as per trust policy.
  • Under the supervision of a registered practitioner safely operate radiotherapy equipment in both the treatment areas as well as in the pre-treatment area.
  • Under the supervision of a registered practitioner carry out machine QA.
  • Report any malfunctions / breakdown of equipment to the appropriate staff.
