Theoretical Scientist - Aldermaston, Berkshire, RG7 4PR

Job Type: Full-Time

Salary: £29,490 - £47,500 per annum + Pension, Life Insurance, 9-Day Fortnight

Location: RG7 4PR, between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.

Due to the classified nature of the work, limited opportunities for remote work are available. The successful candidate will primarily work on-site at AWE Aldermaston.

Package:

  • Junior Scientist (recent graduates): £29,490 - £37,000
  • Experienced Scientist (PhD or post-graduate experience): £38,020 - £47,500

Working pattern: 9-day working fortnight. Flexible working requests are considered.

Role Overview: AWE is recruiting a Theoretical Scientist for the Environments and Transport (EAT) Team within the Radiation Science Group (RSG). The role involves developing physics codes and modeling radiation interactions with matter, applying radiation effects tools, and working with Monte Carlo and deterministic radiation transport techniques. The role offers opportunities to collaborate internationally, develop physics codes using modern software practices, and utilize high-performance computing platforms.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A strong degree in Physics or related field, focusing on modeling or code development.
  • PhD or relevant post-graduate experience is advantageous.
  • Willingness to travel overseas for workshops and peer reviews.
  • Experience with radiation interaction, radiation transport codes (e.g., MCNP, OpenMC, Geant4), programming (Python, C++), Linux, and HPC is desirable.
