Job summary

The Theatre Royal Winchester requires a Theatre Technician on a fixed-term 6‑month contract to join a small technical team. Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will provide expert lighting, sound, and AV support for events, including evenings and weekends as required.

Essential skills include ETC Ion lighting, LED/moving lights, QLab, and strong Health & Safety awareness. The role involves regular heavy lifting and working at heights in a live venue setting.

Qualifications

  • Able to programme lighting desks (ETC Ion).
  • Working knowledge of Sound and AV setup and operation.
  • Knowledge and experience using QLab.
  • Health and Safety best practices.
  • Able to execute simple lighting designs for events.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for events in theatre and beyond.
  • Operate lighting, sound, and AV setups; program cues.
  • Assist with movement and lifting; work at height as needed.
  • Maintain theatre equipment and ensure safety protocols.

  • 6 months contract with option to extend subject to circumstances

Job purpose

To work as part of a small technical team based at Theatre Royal Winchester providing excellent all round technical support for all the organisation's events, both in the theatre and beyond.

The job requires regular heavy lifting (between 10kg and 30kg), climbing vertical ladders, moving weight at height.

Knowledge & experience
Essential
  • Able to programme lighting desks (ETC Ion), with knowledge of generic and LED fixtures, as well as moving lights.
  • Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of Sound and AV set-ups and operation including multi-channel mixing, using the sound desk for sound manipulation, programming sound cues and stage sound set up.
  • Knowledge and experience in using QLab.
  • Understanding and implementation of best practice in relation to Health and Safety.
  • Able to execute simple lighting designs for music events and comedy.
Desirable
  • Previous work in a receiving venue.
  • Experience in counterweight flying.
  • Experience of projection.
  • PAT/EET qualification.
  • Electrical qualification.
  • IOSH/NEBOSH qualification.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Tallescope qualification.
  • Experience working with DANTE based systems.
  • Basic knowledge of IT networking.
  • Experience with Yamaha Sound Consoles.
