Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).
  • Theatre environment experience in scrub, anaesthetics, or recovery.
  • Understanding of infection control, manual handling, and patient safety principles.
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem-solve, and respond quickly to changes in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Applicants must have previous orthopaedic experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare instruments, maintain sterility, anticipate surgeon needs, and assist anaesthetist; provide post-operative care and monitor vital signs.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies at all times.
  • Set up operating theatres according to surgery type and patient requirements.
  • Check all surgical and anaesthetic equipment prior to use and report faults.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve safe and efficient surgical lists.
  • Support a positive, respectful theatre environment.

Theatre Practitioner at The Chiltern Hospital

The Chiltern Hospital in Great Missenden is part of Circle Health Group , Britain's leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals & clinics, performing more complex surgery than any other private healthcare provider in the country.

Contract – 37.5 Hours & Permanent. Salary – up to £43,000.00 per year (depending on level of experience, training and qualification).

Applicants must be able to travel to the sister site – The Shelburne Hospital in High Wycombe – for dual-site working.

We have an opportunity for a Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatre department. Successful applicants must have experience in Orthopaedic Scrub and other specialisms.

Working hours – This is a full time role for 37.5 hours per week. The role holder will be required to cover a flexible shift pattern.

Duties
  • Assist the surgical team by preparing instruments, maintaining sterility, anticipating surgeon needs, and ensuring equipment safety; support the Anaesthetist in equipment preparation, patient monitoring, airway management, and positioning; and provide post-operative care, monitoring vital signs, managing pain and nausea, and ensuring patient readiness for discharge.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and procedures at all times.
  • Set up operating theatres according to surgery type and specific patient requirements.
  • Check all surgical and anaesthetic equipment prior to use and report faults immediately.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve safe and efficient surgical lists.
  • Support and contribute to a positive, respectful, and efficient theatre environment.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).
  • Experience or training in a theatre environment specialising in scrub, anaesthetics, or recovery.
  • Understanding of infection control, manual handling, and patient safety principles.
  • Ability to work under pressure, problem-solve, and respond quickly to changes in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to safe surgical practice.
  • Applicants must have previous orthopaedic experience.
