This role provides exceptional flexibility and top-tier pay rates for experienced ward nurses who excel in high-acuity general medical, surgical, and acute inpatient ward environments. Operating within Bournemoth's leading NHS acute hospital infrastructure, you will work as an integral clinical professional alongside multidisciplinary healthcare teams, consultant physicians, ward managers, and allied health professionals to deliver safe, evidence-based, and compassionate holistic care across a diverse range of adult inpatient units.

Whether you are deeply skilled in managing complex acute medical admissions, overseeing post-operative surgical recovery, or facilitating complex patient discharges, this vacancy offers an ideal pathway to flexible agency shifts within one of Dorset’s flagship coastal healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities & Clinical Duties

As a Band 5 Registered General Nurse, your primary responsibility is to ensure maximum patient safety, precise clinical assessment, and high-quality nursing care from admission through to treatment and discharge across general inpatient wards.

Your day-to-day duties will encompass:

Comprehensive Patient Assessment & Acute Care Delivery
  • Delivering person-centered, evidence-based nursing care to adult patients admitted to general medical, surgical, elderly care, and acute assessment wards in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional standards.
  • Executing detailed physiological clinical observations utilizing National Early Warning Score (NEWS2) protocols, recognizing subtle signs of clinical deterioration, and initiating swift escalation pathways.
  • Performing comprehensive clinical assessments upon admission, establishing individual care needs, and formulating robust, patient-tailored treatment plans.
Medicines Management & Clinical Interventions
  • Preparing, double-checking, administering, and monitoring complex pharmacological therapies, including oral medications, subcutaneous injections, controlled drugs, intravenous (IV) infusions, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) following NHS Trust medicine administration policies.
  • Executing skilled clinical procedures such as complex wound management, aseptic dressing techniques, urinary catheterization (male, female, and suprapubic), cannulation, venepuncture, enteral tube feeding (NG/PEG), and continuous oxygen therapy management.
  • Maintaining continuous monitoring of invasive and non-invasive lines, fluid balance charts, blood glucose monitoring, and syringe drivers.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration & Governance
  • Participating actively in daily ward rounds, clinical handovers, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings alongside doctors, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and discharge coordinators to formulate effective discharge plans.
  • Maintaining meticulous, contemporaneous, and auditable electronic health records (EHR/EPR systems) to guarantee compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards and clinical governance frameworks.
  • Delegating tasks effectively and providing supportive clinical supervision to Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), student nurses, and junior staff members to maintain a safe, efficient ward environment.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
  • Professional Registration: Active registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Adult Nurse (RNA / Level 1 Nurse) with an active PIN and no restrictions on practice.
  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 6-12 months post-qualification experience within NHS acute hospital settings, specifically on general medical, surgical, or acute inpatient wards.
  • Clinical Competence: Proven expertise in physical assessment, NEWS2 escalation, acute medication administration, wound care, infection control standards, and electronic patient documentation.
  • Compliance Standards:
    • Valid Right to Work in the United Kingdom.
    • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate registered on the Update Service.
    • Full occupational health clearance, including verified immunity against Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tuberculosis, and Varicella.
