Job summary

Leonardo UK Ltd is seeking a Test Development Engineer to join the Test Solutions team in Luton. The role spans design and test-solution development, bridging hardware and software to deliver high-performance test capabilities.

You will work with LabVIEW and TestStand, contribute to life-cycle design reviews, and collaborate with suppliers to ensure robust test solutions for complex electronic systems. The position offers hybrid working and UK/Europe travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering field.
• Experience with external suppliers.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Demonstrate teamwork skills.
• Experience in defence electronics, ideally airborne sensor systems.
• DOORS or equivalent requirements capture tool.
• LabVIEW and TestStand experience; or equivalent software test automation tools.

Responsibilities

• Design and problem solving to develop test solutions.
• Capture requirements for Test Equipment Requirement Specifications (TERS).
• Control of parts and documentation including change management.
• Ensure life-cycle design reviews are implemented.
• Develop hardware/software test solutions from requirements to testing.
• Software development using LabVIEW & TestStand.
• Manage suppliers and Make/Buy decisions as required.
• Identify technical risks and mitigation strategies.

Salary: £37,318 - £53,550

Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range shown reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range published within that band, and is benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are managed through governance controls to protect internal equity.

Your Impact

Leonardo has a fantastic opportunity for a Test Development Engineer to join the Test Solutions team. We are seeking a talented and experienced Engineer, familiar with working on complex electronic (ideally RF, Digital and analogue based) Test Solutions.Our Systems Engineers work in multidisciplinary teams spanning a range of activities pulling together the necessary engineering and technology strands into a high-performance system, bridging the gap between the theoretically possible and the practically implementable.

What you will do

• The scope of work can range from design and technical problem solving to test solution development
• Support the requirements capture for Test Equipment Requirement Specifications (TERS)
• Control of Parts and Documentation including change management
• Ensure effective implementation of the company's Life-cycle design reviews
• Be part of a team that develops the hardware/software test solution including the requirements specification through to testing
• Software development using LabVIEW & Test Stand
• Support the management of Suppliers and project Make/Buy decisions as required
• Identify technical risks and mitigation strategies e.g. with test solutions or obsolescence

What you’ll bring

• Good understanding of a range of electronic technologies and a good understand of one of the Hardware/Systems/Software engineering lifecycles
• Experience of working with external supplies
• Degree qualified (or equivalent)
• Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
• Demonstrate team working skills

It would be nice if you had

• Good understanding of digital/analogue/RF systems with ESM and ECM
• Test equipment exposure including operating/maintaining equipment
• Experience of working in the defence electronics sector, ideally with airborne sensor systems
• DOORS or equivalent requirements capture tool
• LabVIEW and TestStand Experience, or equivalent software test automation tools

Travel within the UK and Europe may be required for this role.
