Job summary

TRUMPF United Kingdom in Hedge End, near Southampton, seeks a Test Development Engineer to provide software support for production lines. You will develop software and databases, collaborating with mechanical, hardware and R&D teams to resolve issues and drive new NVI/NPI software projects.

Proficiency in LabVIEW for production testing is essential; knowledge of Matlab, VB.net and VB6 is advantageous. This is an on-site role within our Southampton-area operations.

TRUMPF Lasers is a leading designer and manufacturer of fibre lasers for use in cutting, welding, and marking applications in a wide range of industries. TRUMPF Lasers sells its products globally and has its major business operations, including Research and Development, Manufacturing and Product Marketing located in Southampton, UK, and the rest of Europe with additional Sales and Customer Support locations in Asia and North America. TRUMPF Lasers are introducing key new products at pace and this role is critical to the success of these implementations and growth plans.

Job Purpose:

This is a full-time, on-site Test Development Engineer role based in Hedge End, Southampton. As a software engineer reporting to the Operations Test Team manager, you will be responsible for providing software support for the various Trumpf production lines in Southampton.

You will also be required to provide software support to other areas of business such as our services/quality, R&D and external customers where applicable.

Your role includes but not limited to software development, database or stored procedure related tasks, software work planning, etc. You will be able to investigate and resolve any software bugs in a timely manner.

You will be working alongside Mechanical / Hardware engineers in the operations test engineering team to deliver software solutions, whilst also collaborating with our R&D department for new NVI /NPI software development work.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Development and implementation of software to automate bespoke ATE systems built for the TGBL Southampton manufacturing lines.
• Software and database/stored procedure review or development.
• Investigate and resolve any software issues to support the different manufacturing lines at TGBL Southampton.
• Software programming experience using LabVIEW software for production testing. LabVIEW Core 2 training desirable as a minimum.
• Some knowledge of Matlab, VB.net and VB6 programming to support existing test fixtures.
• Hands on experience of debugging software controlling digital/analogue electronic hardware and power control systems.
• Working with National Instruments digital IO, analogue and communication interfaces.
• Experience in delivering software solutions to control hardware drivers & motors in third-party test equipment.
• Previous experience working within a production environment.
• Good communication skills and ability to collaborate across multiple departments.

Advantageous:

• Knowledge of National Instruments to develop automated solutions.
• Experience interfacing to I2C, RS232, CANBUS, Modbus etc.
• Experience in writing complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and test scripts.
• Experience of using Atlassian JIRA/Confluence.
• PC software Build and set-up in a production environment.
• Develop test solutions for optics beam delivery laser systems.

Formal Qualifications:

Degree qualified in an appropriate engineering discipline, or equivalent through experience and alternative technical qualifications.

Capable of adapting to changing priorities, and able to work well under pressure.

Good fault finding and problem solving skills.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to discuss complex issues with staff at all levels.
