Job summary

Ricoh in Birmingham is seeking a Test Automation Engineer to join a team delivering cutting-edge cloud-based solutions. You will shape quality engineering practices, influence automation approaches, and continuously develop skills in a collaborative environment.

The role focuses on building automated test coverage using Playwright (JavaScript/TypeScript), integrating AI-assisted tooling, and contributing to CI/CD pipelines to improve product quality and engineering speed.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field.
• Experience developing automated tests with JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Proven background with Playwright or similar modern automation framework.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools is a plus.
• Understanding of Agile and CI/CD environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a quality focus.
• Professional English communication is essential.
• ISTQB CTFL cert is desirable; CTAL is a plus.
• Eagerness to explore new technologies and improve automation.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate within a cross-functional Agile team to deliver cloud-based solutions.
• Design and implement automated test coverage from requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Specify automated test cases and review approaches with testers and QA peers.
• Develop and maintain automated tests using Playwright, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
• Investigate failures, identify root causes, and improve automation assets.
• Contribute to engineering standards and best practices for automated testing.
• Enhance AI-supported test automation framework with teammates.
• Identify gaps to improve test coverage, efficiency, scalability, and maintainability.
• Evaluate new automation techniques and AI-assisted approaches.
• Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and development workflows.
• Contribute ideas to improve product quality and team effectiveness.
• Participate in retrospectives and continuous improvement of automation capabilities.

What you will be doing

As a Test Automation Engineer, you will join a team of experts delivering cutting-edge cloud-based solutions for our customers. You will have the opportunity to influence how quality is engineered across our products, contribute to the evolution of our AI-supported automation capabilities, and help shape the future of our quality engineering practices. We are looking for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, exploring new technologies, and continuously developing their skills in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Collaborating within a cross-functional agile team to deliver high-quality cloud-based solutions.
• Analysing requirements and acceptance criteria to design effective automated test coverage.
• Specifying automated test cases and reviewing test approaches with manual testers and other quality engineering professionals.
• Developing and maintaining automated tests using Playwright, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
• Investigating test failures, identifying root causes, and improving the reliability and maintainability of our automation assets.
• Performing peer reviews and contributing to engineering standards and best practices for automated testing.
• Working with fellow Test Automation Engineers to continuously enhance our AI-supported test automation framework.
• Identifying opportunities to improve test automation coverage, efficiency, scalability, and maintainability.
• Evaluating new automation techniques, tools, and AI-assisted approaches to improve the effectiveness of quality engineering activities.
• Collaborating with build and platform engineers to integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and development workflows.
• Contributing ideas and initiatives that improve product quality, engineering productivity, and team effectiveness.
• Participating in retrospectives and continuous improvement activities, helping shape the future direction of our automation capability.

You will ideally have

• Ideally educated to at least degree level or equivalent professional qualification, with preference given to studies in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Previous experience within test automation including experience developing automated tests using JavaScript and TypeScript.
• Proven background and experience with Playwright or a comparable modern test automation framework.
• Any experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar technologies would be a distinct advantage.
• Understanding of agile software development practices and CI/CD environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a passion for improving quality through automation.
• Fluency to a professional English, both written and spoken is essential for this role, with any other language skills an advantage.
• ISTQB CTFL certification is desirable.
• ISTQB CTAL Test Automation Engineer certification would be an advantage.
• Natural ability to problem solve and explore new technologies.
