Job summary

Birmingham City Council is recruiting School Crossing Patrol Wardens to help children cross roads at various Birmingham locations. The role is on a term-time basis with morning and afternoon shifts, approximately 8 hours per week per ward, across multiple school sites.

Training is provided; ideal candidates are patient, reliable and good communicators who can work outdoors in all weather and at busy school drop-offs and collections.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children or the public.
• Excellent communication skills with children, parents, and drivers.
• Friendly, approachable manner and strong customer‑care skills.
• Reliability, good timekeeping, patience, honesty and responsibility.
• Ability to follow instructions and work within set guidelines.
• Initiative and proactive approach to problem solving; able to work independently and stay calm under pressure.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather; able to stand long periods and move briskly in and out of the road.
• Flexibility to provide cover across different sites when needed.

Responsibilities

• Assist children and adults to safely cross the road at designated sites during school term time.
• Manage traffic by following correct crossing procedures and displaying the authorised sign as required by law.
