Temporary Caretaker – Thornwell Primary School
We are seeking to fill the following temporary Caretaker vacancy at Thornwell Primary School.
Duties will include providing a professional cleaning/caretaking service at the School, ensuring that the establishment is opened and closed at designated times, in the approved conditions for occupancy and carrying out daily cleaning duties.
Purpose of this Role:
To ensure that the establishment where the individual is employed is opened and closed at the designated times, in the approved conditions for occupancy, including daily cleaning duties.
Expectations and Outcomes of this Role:
To ensure the maintenance of a hygienic, functional environment that facilitates the effective conduct of Council Business.
Your responsibilities include:
To carry out such reasonable duties as instructed by the Operations Officer to support the function and cleaning of the establishment.
Security Responsibilities:
- Attend to the opening and closing of the premises at designated times and to be responsible for general security at all times. Caretakers may be called out at unsociable hours or at weekends to deal with security problems, make emergency repairs, or allow for emergency repairs.
- Carry out prescribed security duties for the establishment, taking all reasonable and practical steps to prevent trespass.
- Key Holder responsibility, with a nominated key holder to cover during caretaker absence.
Boiler Duties / Energy Conservation:- Oversee, as set out in the energy conservation instructions, the efficient working of heating plant and lighting, monitor fuel consumption, reorder when necessary, keep required records, and maintain specified standards of performance.
- Read meters as required and maintain approved records, including those concerning energy and water conservation matters.
General Duties:- Receive and check all goods and supplies (except contractors' goods) for the school and distribute them as necessary.
- Report to the Headteacher any defects affecting the health and safety of persons on the site and, when possible, make safe and isolate hazards.
- Carry out handyperson duties for the whole site, categorized as follows:
Category I - Items requiring limited skill:- Replacement of sink and basin plugs and chains.
- Fixing of loose woodscrews in furniture and fittings.
- Fixing door handles but not their replacement.
Category II - Items requiring training and subsequent skills:- Repair and replacement of toilet seats.
- Replacement of tap washers to ½ inch size only.
- Provision or repair to door stops/cabin hooks.
- Repairs to cupboard hinges, handles, or locks.
Additional Responsibilities:- Maintain a site diary.
- Report defects on buildings, furniture, fittings, and plant as required by regulations or the instructions of the Headteacher.
- Replenish soap, towels, dispensers, and toilet paper at all lavatories on the whole site as necessary.
- Ensure that all refuse is disposed of to a designated point.
- Carry out all internal cleaning from floor level to 2 metres on a daily basis.
- Undertake the daily cleaning of all internal glass from floor level to 2 metres.
- Test the Fire Alarm system, check fire exits, and upkeep the fire log.
Category III – Additional Items required at Thornwell Primary School:- Put out and take in batteries for the farm electric fence.
- Check electric batteries are working correctly.
- Move items to farm storage such as feed, hay, straw, and shavings when they are delivered.
- Contribute to risk management of outside practices.
- Contribute to end of school day farm jobs such as putting animals away and checking feed and water.
- Assemble flat pack items for school/farm and minor repairs of school toys/equipment.
Caretaker’s Cleaning Responsibilities:- Undertake the cleaning of the school premises to standards as determined by Council Policy agreement.
- Provide access to the premises for the contractors' workforce within approved times.
- Emergency cleaning in areas as requested by the Headteacher via the instruction of the Operations Officer.
