Job summary

The University of Southampton is seeking a Technology Transfer Associate to help grow its portfolio of spin-out companies and commercialise research.

You will work with academic staff to identify opportunities, evaluate commercial potential of concepts and manage relationships with external partners and funders. A relevant degree or professional qualification is preferred, and a flexible hybrid home/office model supports work-life balance.

• Previous commercial experience is valuable but not essential. More important is the ability to evaluate the commercial potential of scientific concepts and a sound knowledge of intellectual property issues in a research environment.

Job description

Join us as a Technology Transfer Associate and you’ll play a pivotal part.

You’ll be joining a university that is highly ranked in the UK for consultancy income generated and that has started 80 spinout and start-up companies since 2000. Your work could touch pioneering developments in cancer immunology, respiratory medicine, next generation diagnostics, clean energy and sustainability, marine, photonics and electronics and computer science.

You will:

• Work on a portfolio of commercialisation projects to further increase IP income generated or to commercialise to maximise social good
• Help manage relationships with key academic staff to understand their research expertise and identify new innovation and commercialisation opportunities
• Use your strong organisational and inter-personal skills to succeed in large, collaborative teams.

Previous commercial experience is valuable but not essential. More important is the ability to evaluate the commercial potential of scientific concepts and a sound knowledge of intellectual property issues in a research environment.

We’ll also look to you to help build networks with potential industry partners and other external stakeholders, such as research funding agencies & charities, investors and local and central government.
