Job description

The primary responsibility of the Technology Data Privacy Legal Counsel is to help Diageo leverage data as a strategic asset, in conjunction with the Senior Data Privacy Director and the Data Privacy team. This role provides strategic guidance on new technologies, advising business users and partners within Digital & Technology.

The successful candidate will have deep knowledge of emerging technologies in data privacy, delivering commercially-minded advice on their implementation within Diageo's ecosystem. They must operate strategically and operationally, proactively identifying solutions and communicating complex messages clearly and persuasively. Legal understanding is essential to explain options in plain English, adapt advice to audiences, and work autonomously.

Interpersonal and influencing skills are necessary, along with flexibility to support various priorities. The role includes presenting and training on data privacy and technology implications to diverse audiences. Collaboration with legal, Data & Technology teams, and global privacy functions is key to ensure effective privacy standards worldwide.

The role involves establishing and maintaining capabilities such as policies, frameworks, and processes related to data collection, use, storage, and management. This includes supporting Diageo's digital transformation, ensuring compliance with laws, building data-savvy capabilities, and aligning privacy with business goals.

Additional responsibilities include developing data management practices, normalizing data usage, and enhancing business outcomes, while maintaining Diageo’s reputation as a responsible data custodian.

Cost management involves delivering legal support cost-effectively, optimizing resources, and controlling legal spend.

Key responsibilities:

  • Advise on legal and reputational matters in Digital & Technology.
  • Collaborate on data projects, ensuring legal advice aligns with specific technologies.
  • Conduct training on emerging technologies and data privacy.
  • Monitor regulatory updates, communicating implications for the business.
  • Draft and review data protection documentation, including data transfer agreements and privacy impact assessments.
  • Negotiate data privacy clauses in technology contracts.
  • Lead privacy reviews and liaise with multiple functions.

The candidate will shape their role within the team, working on innovative projects in a collaborative environment.

Experience required:

  • Qualified lawyer in the EU or UK, or extensive experience in global technology data privacy.
  • Ability to assess new technologies.
  • Experience advising on data privacy in relation to AI/ML, PET, big data, and data governance.
  • 5+ years of legal practice in data privacy, in-house or law firm.
  • Deep knowledge of global privacy laws and best practices in technology.
  • Strong management of partners and complex environments.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting.
