Job summary

Network Rail is hiring a maintenance technician to support the daily upkeep of the rail network. You will work outdoors in a team, ensuring safety and reliability for passengers and freight users. Training and progression are offered to develop skills across signalling, telecoms and related equipment.

Qualifications

  • Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and direct a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of permanent way inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.
  • Familiarity with standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Hold or work towards NVQ level 1 or 2 (or equivalent).
  • Willingness to drive vehicles as required by business need.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with safe systems of work and method statements.
  • Undertake work and duties for which you are trained and competent.
  • Direct work activities safely and efficiently and in line with standards.
  • Check quality of work and ensure assets meet standards.
  • Maintain safety arrangements for staff under your control including contractors.
  • Ensure staff have appropriate competencies.
  • Verify vehicles, plant, tools and materials are fit for use and used/stored correctly.
  • Record all work completed and maintain records as required.
  • Contribute to your own development and that of others.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Your Experience And Skills

Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team's operatives.

Technicians specialise in a range of disciplines and for this role you'll become a specialist in:

Signalling & Telecoms: You'll be working with equipment including signals that control when trains can run, level crossings, and points systems. With your willingness to learn, you'll develop a huge range of technical skills across a range of manual, electrical and digital equipment.

Duties And Responsibilities-
  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements or other relevant instructions.
  • Undertake work and associated duties for which you are trained and competent.
  • Undertake and direct work activities in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with all relevant standards.
  • Control and check the quality of work undertaken and confirm assets are compliant to standards.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate safety arrangements for staff under your control including Contractors.
  • Check that the staff under your control have the appropriate and valid competencies.
  • Check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials under your control are fit for use and are used/stored and disposed of correctly.
  • Accurately report all work completed/not completed and produce/maintain records as required.
  • Contribute to your own development and that of others.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
Essential Criteria-
  • Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Knowledge of how to organise and control the safe and efficient delivery of work.
  • Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
  • Able to lead, motivate and direct a team.
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of permanent way inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.
  • Conversant with standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.
  • Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 1 or 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained an appropriate level of knowledge through equivalent relevant experience.
  • Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
