Brief Description

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day. A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. Our technician community comes from a variety of backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We're focused on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate that, we will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network. If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

About The Role (External)

Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team's operatives. They specialize in various disciplines, and for this role, you'll become a specialist in:

Track

Maintain, inspect, and repair the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures. Technicians work outdoors in all weather conditions, often in demanding environments, and must prioritize safety, respect rules, and work as part of a team, sometimes next to moving trains at high speed.

You matter to your team

Be a natural team player and capable of leading when asked. Use your skills to deliver work safely, ensure team competencies meet safety standards, and model safe working behaviors. Be confident to challenge risks to safety to ensure everyone's safe return home.

You matter to us

Today's technicians can become tomorrow's team leaders. Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We provide training to develop technical and non-technical skills, especially if you're transitioning from another industry.

Your Skills Matter

While rail experience isn't mandatory, demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:

  • Leadership – Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
  • Effective communication – Strong skills to give clear instructions.
  • Technical skills – Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
  • Safety – Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem solving – Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and staying updated with standards and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn – Continuous development of skills and competencies.
  • Relevant qualification – Ideally, NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to the discipline or equivalent experience.
Additional Information
  • Shifts include days, nights, and weekends.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
  • A valid driving license (category B) is required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
  • Applicants should live within a 60-minute commute of the location.
