Job Description

Job Purpose

As a Technical Specialist, you will play a key role in supporting cutting-edge research within the College of Science and Engineering. Your primary responsibility will be to provide expert technical support to research and students and initially be operating in the School of Chemistry, supporting the soft materials laboratories, ensuring researchers have seamless access to the specialised equipment and resources essential for their success.

Aligned with the College Technical Services strategy, you will undertake a range of technical duties that contribute to the smooth operation of research facilities. Beyond your technical expertise, you will be an integral part of a collaborative, service-driven team, working closely with researchers, academics, and fellow technical staff to foster research excellence.

Additionally, you will champion health and safety best practices, maintaining a safe, compliant, and efficient laboratory environment. Your contributions will directly enhance the research capabilities of the College, driving innovation and discovery.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist technical support and instruction to researchers, colleagues and/or customers ensuring efficient laboratory operations and an excellent service user experience.
  • Devise technical solutions to a range of practical problems to facilitate effective research support services and identify and rectify faults/problems with equipment and protocols. Conduct basic equipment repairs and assist students and academic staff in organising repairs, liaising with external companies and engineers to source and order necessary parts.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and provide training on essential lab equipment, including ovens, stirrers, rotary evaporators, pH meters/probes, contact angle instruments, centrifuges, FTIR, and microscopes.
  • Ensure a safe and well-organized laboratory environment, identifying and resolving technical faults and improving lab safety standards by updating signage and SOPs where appropriate.
  • Manage lab waste disposal, including coordinating solvent and specialist chemical waste uplifts, performing gas cylinder changes, and refilling liquid nitrogen as needed.
  • Ensure adequate stock of consumables and equipment, regularly cleaning and restocking glassware.
  • Promptly clarify work requirements with colleagues, manager or service users, identifying and resolving any immediate problems, and referring most complex issues to manager.
  • Work closely with colleagues, participating in team meetings and discussions and contribute to College, Institute, or School activities. Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 [National 5 or National 6/Highers, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2 Up to date knowledge of laboratory Health and Safety legislation/policies.

A3 Technical knowledge of the equipment and operation in a research lab environment for chemistry.

Desirable

B1 HNC/HND in relevant discipline.

Skills

Essential

C1 Demonstrable laboratory technical skills and experience using basic laboratory equipment including but not limited to ovens, stirrers, rotary evaporators, pH meters/probes, centrifuges, FTIR, and microscopes.

C2 Ability to work effectively independently and with others, including own team and lab users.

C3 Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.

C4 Ability to use initiative and judgement to resolve problems.

C5 Strong IT skills including both standard and specialist software programmes.

Experience

Essential

E1 Experience of operating in research lab environments.

Desirable

F1 Demonstrable work experience in a similar role.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £23,881 - £26,338 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
