Overview

Roads Technician - Guildford office

You’ll work with engineers, project managers and early-career professionals on a range of road network and infrastructure projects, including highway design, local highway improvements, and large multi-disciplinary initiatives. The role involves maintaining and improving the quality of engineering outputs and may cover a variety of project types from access and haul roads to national grids upgrades.

Key Duties

• Work in a multidisciplinary team delivering innovative solutions.


• Deliver engineering solutions for projects, or work packages of varying scale, complexity, value and project stages, and could be working across several projects at any given time.


• Liaise with our clients, stakeholders and internal disciplines, developing trusted relationships and proactively managing expectations.


• Work closely with Project and Technical Delivery teams to measure carbon on our projects using the WSP Future Ready programme.


• Be part of the team to deliver in compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in‑house quality assurance.


• Use design and drafting tools such as Civil 3D/AutoCAD; additional skills in Bentley design software such as OpenRoads Designer or MicroStation are advantageous.


• Familiarity with BIM environments such as ProjectWise, Autodesk Forma (formerly ACC), other Common Data Environments, CAD QA/QC processes and collaborative digital delivery would also be beneficial.


• Interest or capability in digital automation, data-driven design or computational tools, including AI-assisted workflows, Python, C++, Dynamo or similar, is welcomed.

Qualifications

• Level 4 qualification (or above) in a STEM based subject, or equivalent experience in an engineering technician role.


• Attaining or working towards professional qualifications such as EngTech, with demonstrable progress.


• Good knowledge of relevant design standards and codes of best practice such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, and local authority design guidance.


• Understanding of highway engineering principles, including design techniques, standards and procedures, with the ability to apply this knowledge to small-scale projects or a limited number of moderately complex projects.


• Passion for design and developing innovative solutions, demonstrating initiative and ingenuity to solve engineering problems.


• Experience of data handling with MS Excel and/or other data-based systems.


• Demonstrable experience engaging with clients, developers, consultants, elected representatives and the public.


• Good organisational skills and an attention to detail.


• Ability to undertake site visits to inform designs.
