You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from various backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network.

If you meet the standards, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

About the role (External)

Our technicians serve as the essential link between the team leader and the team members.

Technicians specialize in various disciplines, and for this role, you'll become a specialist in:

Off track: Responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing land alongside the track to ensure safety and efficiency. This includes vegetation management, drainage, and ancillary structures.

Technicians work outdoors in all weather conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. The work can be physically demanding, often requiring transport of equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near moving high-speed trains.

You matter to your team

As a natural team player, you'll also be capable of leading when asked by the team leader. Your skills will help deliver work safely, and you'll ensure the team has the necessary competencies to meet safety standards. You will role model safe behaviors and be confident to challenge potential safety risks to ensure everyone's safety.

You matter to us

Today's technicians can progress to become tomorrow's team leaders.

Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide all the training needed to develop technical and non-technical skills. If you're transitioning from another industry, structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence to build a rewarding career in rail.

While rail experience isn't mandatory, you should demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
  • Effective communication: Strong skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and colleagues.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline.
  • Safety: Role modeling safe behaviors, implementing safe systems of work, and confidently challenging unsafe situations.
  • Problem solving: Persistence in finding safe and effective solutions, and keeping up-to-date with standards and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn: Continuous development of skills and knowledge relevant to your discipline.
  • Relevant qualification: Ideally, an NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to your discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Additional information:

  • Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends with a changing pattern.
  • Outdoor working: Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
  • Safe working: Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
  • Driving: A valid category B driving license is required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute times: Applicants should live within a 60-minute commute of the location.
