Our Technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate these, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the Standard Maintenance contract.

Application process: You will need to complete pre-screening questions; please read each carefully before responding.

About the role (External)

Our Technicians serve as the vital link between the Team Leader and Operatives.

Technicians specialize in various disciplines; for this role, you’ll become an expert in Off Track.

You’ll maintain, inspect, and repair land alongside the track network to ensure safety and efficiency, including vegetation management, drainage, and ancillary structures.

Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, day or night. The work can be physically demanding, often requiring transport of equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially when working near high-speed trains.

A natural team player, you’ll be able to lead when asked by the team leader. You’ll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards. Being a role model for safe working behaviors and confidently challenging potential risks is essential so everyone can return home safely each day.

You matter to us

Technicians can progress to become Team Leaders. Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide comprehensive training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If transitioning from another industry, our structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence for a rewarding rail career.

While rail experience isn’t mandatory, you should demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following requirements:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
  • Effective communication: Strong skills to give clear instructions and collaborate effectively.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
