Role

Working with the staff in the XR Stories team, the Technician in Creative Technologies will be responsible for the day to day running of the XR Stories Studio. They will also be key to working with the businesses and researchers who use the lab, using expertise to support R&D, running demonstrations, engaging visitors, and working with the equipment in the lab to show the capabilities and possibilities of the facility.

We also expect the Technician in Creative Technologies to create exemplar demonstrations of technology and content which could be used to promote our work to the sector. The successful applicant should be willing to learn new technologies and implement ways of engaging businesses and researchers in their use. There will be opportunity for the successful applicant to explore Disguise training to become more familiar with the Lab’s virtual production set-up.

There will also be opportunities to develop and deliver technically-oriented workshops, and deliver these across the North Yorkshire region, as well as in the XR Stories R&D Studio at the Guildhall in York.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have:

  • Thorough, up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge of immersive technologies and techniques (particularly spatial audio, virtual/augmented reality, virtual production and game engine development).
  • Proven track record in immersive/interactive software development (e.g. experience in game development).
  • Proven ability to work independently and creatively, using problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to present complex ideas in a clear and concise manner and communicate with a wide range of people, such as colleagues, students and non-scientists.
  • HNC, HND, undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience.
  • RSciTech/EngTech, or willingness to work towards, or equivalent professional registration.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety regulations & procedures, for example COSHH and risk assessment.
  • Ability to perform complex technical tasks to a consistent high standard with attention to detail.
  • IT skills for a wide range of applications, including Google Apps, Word, Excel and specialist software where appropriate.
  • Ability to coordinate & supervise members of the team, allocating work as required.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data and explain complex information to others.
