Job Description:

Brief Description

You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of our work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway safe and operational for passengers and freight.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds. This might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for safe and competent work on the network.

If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company ranked in the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you choose the standard maintenance contract.

About the role (External)

Technicians are the vital link between team leaders and operatives.

Specializing in a range of disciplines, for this role, you’ll become a specialist in Track: responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This is a manual role working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and structures supporting the trains.

Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, rule adherence, and teamwork are critical as you work near moving trains at high speed.

You matter to your team

As a natural team player, you’ll lead when asked, ensuring work is delivered safely and team competencies meet safety standards. You’ll model safe behaviors and proactively challenge risks to ensure everyone’s safety.

You matter to us

Technicians can progress to become future team leaders. We value your self-development and will provide training to enhance both technical and non-technical skills. Transitioning from another industry is possible with our structured training program.

While rail experience isn’t mandatory, demonstrating your transferable skills in the following areas is essential:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team safely and efficiently.
  • Effective communication: Deliver clear instructions and collaborate effectively.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge of inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
  • Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem-solving: Persistently find safe, effective solutions and stay updated with standards and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn: Continually develop skills and stay informed about new standards and practices.
  • Relevant qualification: Ideally, hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in your discipline or equivalent experience.

Additional information:

  • Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
  • Outdoor work: Comfortable working in all weather conditions.
  • Pre-employment checks: Drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight tests.
  • Driving license: Category B license required for driving Network Rail vehicles.
  • Commute: Reside within 60 minutes of the location.
