Job Description:

Brief Description

You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day.

A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from various backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate them, we will provide all necessary training for you to work safely and competently on the network.

If you meet the requirements, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that joined the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.

Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you opt for the standard maintenance contract.

About the role (External)

Our technicians bridge the gap between team leaders and operatives.

Specializing in Distribution & Plant, you'll work to ensure power flows safely through electrified rails, maintaining the electrical systems that power trains, signals, and stations.

Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, often involving manual work and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are essential, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.

Team Role

As a natural team player, you’ll lead when asked, ensuring work is done safely and team competencies meet safety standards. You’ll model safe behaviors and proactively address potential safety risks.

Career Development

Technicians can progress to become team leaders. We value self-development and continuous learning, providing training to develop technical and non-technical skills, even for those new to rail.

While rail experience isn't mandatory, your transferable skills should demonstrate:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate teams for safe, efficient work.
  • Effective communication: Clear instructions to team and colleagues.
  • Technical skills: Experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline.
  • Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and staying updated with standards and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn: Continual skill development.
  • Relevant qualification: NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline, or equivalent experience.

Additional Information

  • Shifts: Including days, nights, and weekends.
  • Outdoor work: Comfortable working in varying weather conditions.
  • Safety checks: Employment subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical, BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
  • Driving license: Category B license required to operate company vehicles.
  • Commute: Must live within 60 minutes of the location.
