Job Description

Job Purpose

Technician in the Operations and Training group working closely with other members of the technical and support staff. You will provide detailed technical knowledge in setting up day to day operations, training and ensuring equipment is ready for user demand in a world class academic cleanroom. First point of contact for Equipment and laboratory issues. Support the smooth and effective running of the cleanroom facility and/or assigned projects as directed by line manager/director of operations/research engineer.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to users within the specified discipline or assigned projects. Contribute to the overall smooth and efficient running of the lab to ensure an excellent experience for service users.
  • Train Users and Staff on various nanofabrication tools and techniques.
  • Operate and assist with the maintenance of various nanofabrication tools.
  • Carry out a range of technical support activities including the use of specialist equipment, systems, procedures, protocols, models and/or techniques. Contribute to the creation and development of new technical resources and/or ways of working as directed by relevant senior staff. Identify, propose and implement technical solutions to a range of practical problems.
  • Keep clear and accurate records on the internal website and where relevant produce concise written summaries of results for senior staff. Analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and present findings accurately.
  • Contribute to the safe and well-organised functioning of the cleanroom. Maintain laboratory areas appropriately and identify and rectify any technical faults/problems. Ensure that consumables and equipment are appropriately stocked and maintained.
  • To provide guidance to users in the best application and operation of technical resources.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required.
  • Keep up to date with advances in the relevant discipline and seek to apply this knowledge to technical activities to further enhance the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research aims.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

A1. Either: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 [National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Detailed technical knowledge of relevant systems, equipment and processes used in fabrication or similar industrial/research laboratories.

A3. Good knowledge of cleanrooms or similar closely control environment protocols.

A4. Knowledge and understanding of relevant laboratory Health and Safety procedures.

Desirable:

B1. Degree in Applied Science, Chemistry or Engineering related discipline.

B2. Working knowledge of vacuum technology or lithography techniques

Skills

Essential:

C1. Good communication skills.

C2. Proven ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.

C3. Proven ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.

C4. Proven ability to carry out routine tasks as determined by line manager, senior technical staff, director of operations or research engineer.

C5. Good technical problem solving skills.

C6. Basic IT skills, competent with email, MS office etc.

C7. Ability to learn and understand new technologies, techniques and working practices.

Desirable:

D1. Proven skills in semiconductor fabrication or similar high precision process work.

Experience

Essential:

E1. Experience of operating and maintaining specialist laboratory equipment.

E2. Experience of policies, procedures and quality standards applicable in a research laboratory or equivalent working environment.

E3. Experience of providing technical support and giving advice to clients.

Desirable:

F1. Experience of working in a cleanroom or similar close controlled environment.

F2. Experience of working in a University research or teaching laboratory.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £23,881 - £26,338 per annum.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
