Job summary

dBs Institute in Bristol is looking for live sound engineers, studio engineers, producers or AV technicians for permanent part-time roles. You will join the Technical Operations team to keep studios, venues and rehearsal spaces ready for teaching and use.

You’ll provide hands-on technical support to students and staff, troubleshoot equipment and help manage technical resources. Flexible, part-time daytime/evening/weekend shifts apply.

Qualifications

• Experience in live sound, studio engineering, AV tech or music technology is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Prepare studios, rehearsal rooms and performance spaces for teaching and practical activity.
• Provide hands-on technical support to students and academic staff.
• Troubleshoot, repair and maintain AV, studio and music-technology equipment.
• Carry out preventative maintenance and keep equipment records up to date.
• Support equipment loans, bookings and day-to-day technical resource management.
• Provide technical support for events, showcases and inductions.
• Offer safe, clear inductions and assist with software updates and licensing.
• Contribute to equipment purchasing and campus facility development.

Reports to: Head Technician

Are you a live sound engineer, studio engineer, producer, gigging musician, AV technician or music technology specialist looking for reliable, flexible work that fits around your professional practice?

As a Technician, you'll join our Technical Operations team, working alongside the Head Technician, Technical Manager and Head of Campus to keep our studios, performance venue, rehearsal rooms and other technical spaces safe, well maintained and ready for use.

You’ll be a key point of contact for students and staff, providing practical, hands‑on technical support and helping students get the most from our equipment and facilities. The role is varied and collaborative, with plenty of opportunity to bring your own professional experience and technical expertise into an educational environment.

Your day-to-day could include:

• Preparing studios, rehearsal rooms, performance spaces and other facilities for teaching and practical activity.
• Providing hands‑on technical support to students and academic staff.
• Troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining AV, studio and music technology equipment.
• Carrying out preventative maintenance and keeping equipment records up to date.
• Supporting equipment loans, bookings and the day-to-day management of technical resources.
• Providing technical support for performances, showcases, open days, inductions and other events.
• Supporting sound, stage, recording, AV and equipment logistics as appropriate to your area of expertise.
• Delivering technical inductions and helping students use spaces and equipment safely and effectively.
• Supporting software updates, licensing and technical systems.
• Contributing technical knowledge to equipment purchasing and development of campus facilities.
• Helping maintain high standards of health and safety across technical and performance spaces.
• Supporting building opening and closing procedures and carrying out minor maintenance where appropriate.
• Working with the wider campus team to improve technical services and the student experience.

We have several permanent, part‑time positions available, with working patterns agreed around campus requirements and your availability. You'll work up to four shifts per week, covering a mix of daytime, evening and weekend shifts, with the rota confirmed at the start of each study block so you know your working pattern in advance.

We also offer term‑time‑only positions, giving you your summers free. This makes the role particularly well suited to professionals who tour, work festivals, take on freelance projects or want to focus on their own music and creative practice during the summer. It could also be a great fit for recent graduates in music technology, engineering or performance looking for reliable work alongside their own practice and career development.

And importantly, we’re not looking for one person who can do everything. We welcome applications from people with a range of technical specialisms, whether your background is in live sound, studio engineering and production, AV, instrument maintenance, recording or music technology.
