Eligibility

Please note that this position is open to candidates currently based in the United Kingdom with the right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor visa applications at this time.

Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Technician to join our growing team. In this role, you will support the assembly, installation, testing, and maintenance of advanced mechanical systems for our experimental fusion devices and HTS magnet technology. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone with a strong mechanical background. The candidate should have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to take initiative, especially when tasked with creating custom parts and components.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assemble, install, and maintain mechanical components and systems used in fusion devices and supporting infrastructure.
  2. Work closely with mechanical and systems engineers to support the build and integration of complex machinery and experimental setups.
  3. Take initiative in responding to requests for custom parts—engaging with requestors to clarify requirements and propose effective solutions.
  4. Interpret technical drawings, CAD models, and assembly instructions to ensure high-precision construction.
  5. Support the setup and operation of mechanical test rigs, including data collection and diagnostics.
  6. Identify issues in mechanical systems or designs and provide practical solutions.
  7. Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting on mechanical systems to ensure operational reliability.
  8. Maintain accurate records of mechanical builds, modifications, and test results.
  9. Ensure compliance with safety procedures and participate in risk assessments and quality control.
Requirements
  • Proven hands-on experience in a workshop or laboratory environment, ideally within a high-tech or R&D setting.
  • Strong mechanical fitting experience, assembly of systems or subsystems, and fabrication skills such as building ITEM frameworks from drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with a range of hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose issues and develop practical solutions.
  • NVQ Level 3, BTEC, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.
Desirable
  • Experience in vacuum systems, cryogenics, or high-precision engineering.
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, or CNC operations.
  • Prior work in energy, aerospace, nuclear, or related high-tech industries.
  • Skills in Mechanical Engineering, Factory Maintenance, Instrumentation, Automation, and Mechatronics.
  • Forklift or crane operation certification is a plus.
Safety-critical duties

This job includes hazards or safety-critical activities which will require successful pre-employment health screening:

  • Working at height (ladders, scissor lifts, cherry pickers, scaffolding)
  • Working in hot or cold environments
  • Manual handling
  • Use of welding equipment
  • Use of lathes, milling machines, band saws, pillar drills, or other large workshop machinery (operators must prove competence prior to use)
  • Work with cryogenic fluids including liquid nitrogen
  • Working with or near equipment that produces high magnetic fields
  • Handling materials managed under hazardous substances regulations (COSHH)
Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on skills and experience, to be discussed at interview. Benefits include 28 days holiday (including festive break) plus bank holidays, discretionary performance bonuses, share options scheme, pension scheme, and financial benefits such as group life insurance, critical illness cover, health cash plan, and discounts. We also invest in training and development, offering opportunities for career progression, and the chance to work on world-class innovation projects.
