The opportunity:

We currently have an exciting role for a Technical Underwriter to join our Care/Social Welfare team here at Markel. We continue to invest in our Underwriting team to support our growing portfolio, and this role will beresponsible for supporting the development and oversight of a profitable and growing portfolio, working predominantly with the Head of Care but also alongside other departments such as Sales, Actuarial and Claims teams as well as external partners.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Management of delegated business to ensure:

    • Pricing and underwriting integrity is maintained

    • Adherence to binder underwriting strategy and guidance including periodic Cover holder audits

    • Oversight & control of account performance

    • Quality of existing and incoming business is maintained

  • Analysis and development of opportunities for growth, efficiency and technical expertise in both scheme and open market environments

  • Responding to top tier referrals business from underwriters, delegated cover holders and claims department in accordance with underwriting authorities

  • Participate as part of the wider Markel team in market promotion and product launches

  • Monitor and report activities and provide timely and relevant management information

  • Role model the Markel Style and contribute to product leadership across the business, working with colleagues across Markel International

Our must haves:

  • Relevant underwriting experience in an underwriting role and demonstrable technical skills across property liability

  • Background and experience in commercial combined business

  • Any experience of the Care/Social Welfare sector would be nice but not essential

  • Experience in handling delegated accounts is desirable but not essential

  • Have excellent written and spoken communication skills

  • Strong report writing skills

  • Track record in building and developing internal and broker relationships

  • Good organisational skills

  • Good regulatory knowledge

  • Demonstrable IT skills including MS Office and our systems including the broker e-trading platform and strong Excel skills

  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret MI and KPI’s relevant to account performance

  • Be studying for/or be willing to study for CII qualifications (fully funded)
