We’ve come a long way since our co-founders (Kev & Dave) hand-delivered the first Butternut Box, we now feed a lot of dogs across the UK - but we want to feed dogs everywhere. And to do this, we need a team of brilliant people who share that ambition to come and work with us.

A bit about the role

The job holder will have full accountability for any Food safety, Quality and Hygiene related matters on shift, they will lead and coordinate the work of the quality assurance and hygiene teams to deliver and implement service improvement, in line with operational day to day needs with regards to safety, quality, environment and legality.

As the most senior shift contact for Technical matters, you will take a forward thinking approach to manage reactive, pro-active and continuous improvements to result in the best food safety and quality we can serve our customers.

Through the leadership of a team of Quality Assurance & Process Leads and hygiene operatives, provide support to the Production and other Functional teams in delivering the Site Quality and Hygiene Objectives.

In this role, you can expect to:

  1. Manage a team of Quality Assurance & Process Leads and Hygiene operatives on shift with all the in-line management requirements (shift cover, absence management, return-to-works)
  2. Develop the capability of the team of Quality Assurance & Process Leads and Hygiene operatives to ensure they have skills and behaviours required to fulfil their role
  3. Direct the team to deliver the quality management system (audits, microbiological monitoring, quality assurance checks, etc)
  4. Provide data and demonstrate operational practice in support of external audits to enable compliance with customer requirements.
  5. Monitor departmental KPI’s, carry out the necessary investigation and adjust team activity to ensure targets are achieved.
  6. Lead and deliver project(s) with either a compliance or business improvement purpose within agreed timescales.
  7. Ensure that a safe working environment exists for all squad members and that as a minimum the department meets the standards set out for H&S.
  8. Proactively solve and prevent issues and incidents, practice efficient root cause analysis with a clear timeline of events and effective preventative actions.
  9. Provide leadership and direction to the hygiene community to ensure that people are engaged, focused and delivering their potential.
  10. Monitor, audit and review the performance of the manufacturing unit hygiene activities to identify areas of improvement and innovation to ensure hygiene activities are delivered to plan, budget, and standards beyond compliance.
  11. Risk-assess and release product in line with accepted practice
  12. Escalate food safety issues in line with local guidance
  13. You have a thorough understanding of food quality and hygiene gained within a human grade food manufacturing setting
  14. You have a solution-based approach to problems and seek permanent fixes
  15. You’re highly organised with great attention to detail
  16. Hungry for a challenge and keen to build this role
  17. You can prioritise multiple tasks of varying importance
  18. You take full ownership, accountability and drive to achieve goals
  19. Ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders, of all levels
  20. We would prefer if you have previous leadership experience
  21. Loves dogs (naturally)
  22. Food degree or equivalent qualification and or relevant experience (L3 or L4 Food Hygiene and HACCP)
  23. Pest control knowledge
  24. Principles of hygiene including CIP and microbiological hygiene
  25. Computer literate in either the Google or Microsoft suites
  26. Basic knowledge of Weight legislation
  27. Knowledge of technical KPIs
  28. Root cause analysis including fishbone and 5-whys

  • This role is 100% based in our kitchen in Blyth, south of Doncaster (just off the Junction of A1(M) and A614 Hill Top Roundabout, Blyth S81 8HG)
