We're searching for a talented and analytical thinker to join our Depot Technical Support Team. If you're a rail vehicle expert with a passion for solving problems and keeping operations running smoothly, this could be the perfect role to keep your career on the right track!

Do you take pride in:
  • Problem-Solving: Tackling technical queries and finding solutions to ensure our fleet is always ready to roll. Investigating safety issues and incidents and helping keep everything on schedule.
  • Teamwork: Working closely with depot production teams, contractors, and engineers to ensure seamless operations. Your collaborative spirit will help keep our trains on track!
  • Technical Expertise: Using your deep knowledge of Northern's rail vehicles to provide top-tier support and technical insights. From warranty issues to component checks, you'll play a key role in keeping us moving.
  • Safety First: Ensuring that all technical issues are resolved with the highest safety standards in mind, so that everything stays on time and on point.
  • Adaptability: Whether it's a routine check or an urgent repair, your flexibility and quick thinking will keep our fleet in tip-top condition, no matter what challenges arise.
Are you:
  • Technically Skilled? With engineering qualifications to NVQ level 3 in Engineering and experience with rail vehicles, you're well-prepared for this role.
  • Supportive? You'll play a key role in supporting the Fleet Engineer and the wider teams, to ensure the TrainCare Centre (TCC) operates smoothly, maintaining fleet safety and reliability.
  • Analytical and Organised? You have a sharp mind for diagnosing issues and a methodical approach to solving them.
  • A Strong Communicator? You can confidently work with colleagues, contractors, and engineers to provide technical support and guidance.
  • Flexible? You're ready to travel between depots when necessary, and you understand that a typical day can have a few unexpected challenges.
Please note this role is safety critical and is subject to Rail Safety & Standards Board (RSSB) regulations. You MUST meet the following criteria for this position, or your application will be automatically rejected:
  • Currently live within a 45-minute car journey from the station you work from.
  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Pass the safety critical medical assessment, including drugs and alcohol screening.
  • Not have defective colour vision.

Why Northern?

We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
