Job summary

MBDA, based in Stevenage, seeks an experienced power electronics engineer to join the Firing Units and Power Electronics team. The role focuses on PMSM control and mixed analogue/digital electronics across the full product lifecycle.

The position offers hybrid working (3 days on site) with potential relocation; BPSS security clearance is required after the offer. A competitive package includes bonus, pension, and flexible benefits.

Qualifications

• Strong power electronics background with experience in PMSM control systems (defence/auto traction).
• Experience with mixed analogue & digital control electronics design: inverters, DC-DC, encoders, sensors, current sensing & conditioning, logic.
• Experience in full product development life cycle.
• Experience with Design for Test & Design for Manufacture.
• Experience with EMC & ENV compliance.
• Experience of design for high safety integrity (Design Assurance Level / Safety Integrity Level).
• Appreciation for Systems Engineering, System Architecture, Thermal management, Reliability.

Responsibilities

• Being a first point of contact for advice and support on technical and process related queries, and providing more formal support options.
• Work on process improvement, identify opportunities, and promote awareness of relevant company processes across the team.
• Actively track the project activities of each Tech Lead, through regular catch ups and/or reviewing the reporting materials that they generate to their project design authority.
• Periodically review each Tech Lead’s L4 project plans.
• Provide pro-active guidance and course correction where potential issues are identified.
• Support project gate reviews by advising on review pack contents and potentially holding pre-review before the actual gate review takes place.
• Esacalation route to support cost effective technical delivery solutions (stakeholders include Head of Actuators...).
• Tailor the level of support and involvement as appropriate, based on the needs of each individual team Tech Lead.
• Investigate opportunities for offloading as applicable for each project.
• Provide technical input to bids in support of Actuator CofEx new business.

Overview

Are you passionate about engineering? As a member of our Firing Units and Power Electronics team, this is a fantastic opportunity to play an integral role in delivering our products.

Location: Stevenage. Salary up to £57,000 depending on experience. We may offer a relocation package for this role. Dynamic (hybrid) working: typically 3 days per week on site. Where possible, we will seek to accommodate a blended approach to on-site and remote working. Security Clearance: British Citizen. Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply. After offer stage, all successful candidates will need to undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS), managed by the MBDA Personnel Security Team.

The opportunity

• To be an escalation route to support realistic cost effective technical delivery solutions (Stakeholders include Head of Actuators, Equipment EDA, Head of Equipment Delivery).
• Tailor the level of support and involvement as appropriate, based on the needs of each individual team Tech Lead.
• Investigate opportunities for offloading as applicable for each project.
• Provide technical input to bids in support of Actuator CofEx new business.

What we’re looking for

• Strong power electronics background, ideally with experience in PMSM control systems (from Automotive Traction or Defence).
• Experience with mixed analogue & digital control electronics design, including: Power Inverters (discrete gate drives & 3 phase bridge power stage) / DC-DC converters / Digital Position Encoders / Analogue Position Sensors / Current Sensors & Signal Conditioning / Discrete Control Logic.
• Experience in full product development life cycle.
• Experience with Design for Test & Design for Manufacture.
• Experience with designing for EMC & ENV compliance.
• Experience of design for high safety integrity (Design Assurance Level / Safety Integrity Level).
• Appreciation for Systems Engineering, System Architecture Design, Thermal Management techniques, Reliability.
