Job description

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or simply take you in an exciting new direction, HSBC offers opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Technical Services Manager.

You’ll be a hands‑on senior engineering lead and people manager, responsible for modernising the mainframe developer experience and SDLC across the UK, USA and Mexico, shifting teams from traditional mainframe SCM to a GitHub-centred model, standardising tooling and “golden paths”, and improving productivity through automation and responsible AI‑assisted engineering while owning end‑to‑end delivery of developer tooling capabilities (including production‑grade APIs), acting as a senior technical escalation point, and leading a team of 5–8 engineers.

You’ll collaborate with Product Owners and Delivery Managers to standardise practices and deliver a consistent developer experience.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you will have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK‑based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role you’ll:

  • Lead features from design build test release operational readiness, contributing directly through coding and code reviews

  • Establish and uphold standards for maintainability, security, reliability, and observability across the mainframe DevEx/tooling estate

  • Act as senior escalation for complex build/deploy/tooling issues across UK/US/Mexico, driving root‑cause fixes

  • Define and deliver a measurable DevEx roadmap—faster onboarding, fewer manual steps, clearer standards, improved feedback loops, and productivity gains

  • Build and maintain standard templates and practices (e.g., repo standards, branching strategy, build/deploy patterns, documentation) adopted consistently across regions

  • Lead the shift from traditional mainframe SCM approaches to a GitHub‑centred model, embedding PR‑based change control, code review discipline, branch protections, automated quality gates, and auditable release patterns

  • Engineer and standardise a secure, supportable, scalable toolchain for source, build, artefact, and deployment across regions; design and deliver production‑grade APIs wrapping SDLC/platform tooling (clear contracts, versioning, resilience, observability)

  • Introduce and scale AI‑assisted engineering practices with safe working and review expectations; run structured pilots, quantify outcomes, and scale what works across UK/US/MX

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Hands‑on mainframe engineering (z/OS SDLC) with a strong delivery background in a controlled enterprise environment

  • Traditional mainframe SCM expertise with working knowledge of Endevor/Changeman‑class (or equivalent) including promotion models, packages, approvals/audit trails, and segregation of duties

  • Demonstrated experience moving teams to GitHub‑based engineering (branching models, PR governance, repo standards, automated checks/quality gates)

  • Proven experience building or enabling platform/operating services on the mainframe, with understanding of how services run across online and batch processing

  • Experience delivering APIs for engineering consumption with clean contracts, security, logging/monitoring, error handling, and versioning

  • Proven line management experience leading engineers and owning outcomes (ideally managing 5–8 engineers)

  • Ability to drive adoption and remove blockers across multiple countries/regions, time zones, and organisational boundaries

  • Ability to quickly pick up new technologies across mainframe and distributed stacks and translate them into practical team adoption
