Job description

Technical Project Manager / Pre-Sales Consultant
Employment Type: Full-Time / Permanent (to be confirmed)
Reporting to: Chief Operating Officer – Operations / Project Delivery
Role Focus: Approximately 50% Project Delivery / 50% Technical Pre-Sales
About the Role

An established provider of physical IT infrastructure services is seeking a technically credible, customer-facing Technical Project Manager / Pre-Sales Consultant to support business growth and deliver successful customer projects.

Combining technical pre-sales engagement with end-to-end project management, you will work closely with the sales team to identify opportunities, understand customer requirements, conduct site assessments, develop practical solutions and contribute to proposals. You will then manage projects through planning and delivery to completion, maintaining continuity between what is proposed and what is delivered.

The role covers data centre relocations, IT hardware installations and decommissioning, structured cabling, IT logistics and related infrastructure services. Alongside project delivery, you will help develop customer relationships, identify opportunities within existing accounts and share your knowledge to strengthen the wider team's pre-sales capability.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Pre-Sales & Commercial Development

Work with senior commercial leaders and the sales team to identify, qualify and develop new business opportunities.

Engage customers to understand technical requirements, operational challenges and business objectives.

Conduct site surveys, technical assessments and project-scoping meetings.

Develop suitable technical solutions, scopes of work, cost estimates and input to customer proposals.

Identify delivery risks, dependencies, assumptions and commercial considerations before commitments are made.

Present and explain proposed solutions to customers, supporting the sales team throughout the opportunity lifecycle.

Recognise opportunities for additional services, repeat business and growth within existing customer accounts.

Ensure proposed solutions are practical, deliverable and commercially viable.

Technical Solution Development

Apply broad knowledge of physical data centre infrastructure, including IT relocations, hardware installation and decommissioning, structured cabling and related services.

Advise customers and colleagues on appropriate technical approaches and delivery methodologies.

Account for live data centre constraints, change control, operational risk and relevant industry good practice.

Engage specialist engineers and suppliers when more specialised technical input is required.

Project Management & Delivery

Own assigned projects from planning through to successful completion, including projects supported during the pre‑sales phase.

Develop and maintain project plans, budgets, schedules, resource requirements and risk assessments.

Coordinate internal engineering teams, subcontractors, suppliers and other delivery resources.

Manage customer expectations and communicate clearly throughout the project lifecycle.

Monitor quality, cost, timescales and scope; manage risks, issues and changes, escalating where appropriate.

Maintain accurate project documentation and delivery status in company systems.

Complete project reviews and capture lessons learned to improve future delivery.

Team Development & Operational Improvement

Coach colleagues in customer engagement, requirements gathering, technical scoping, estimating and solution development.

Help improve the team's confidence, consistency and independence in pre‑sales activities.

Share technical and commercial knowledge and provide guidance without formal line‑management responsibility.

Identify and recommend improvements to delivery processes, tools, efficiency, quality and profitability.

Promote ownership, collaboration, commercial awareness and continuous improvement.

Technical Environment

The successful candidate will have experience working within one or more of the following environments:

Physical data centre infrastructure and live data centre environments

Data centre relocation and migration projects

IT hardware installation, decommissioning and IT logistics

Structured cabling and related infrastructure services

Engineering teams, specialist suppliers and subcontractor coordination

Technical Expertise

Strong experience in several of the following areas:

Customer requirements gathering, site surveys and technical scoping

Technical solution development, estimating and scope-of-work preparation

Candidate Requirements

Experience in customer-facing technical discussions, requirements gathering, site surveys and project scoping.

Ability to develop technically credible solutions, accurate estimates and clear scopes of work.

Commercial awareness and experience contributing to the development or winning of customer opportunities.

Proven ability to manage technical projects independently, including budgets, resources, suppliers, risks and customer relationships.

Broad understanding of data centre infrastructure services, including relocations, hardware installations and structured cabling.
