Job summary

Company Shop Group in Darton, Barnsley, seeks a Technical & Packing Operations Supervisor to oversee the open product packing room and ensure safe, compliant operation.

You will lead daily production, develop the team, and ensure products meet high standards of food safety, quality and legality across shifts and ambient/chilled/freezer environments.

Qualifications

• Experience in a supervisory or team leadership role within food production, packing or a similar controlled environment.
• Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene, GMP, allergen management, traceability and labelling controls.
• Ability to plan workloads, lead a team and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience with production or warehouse management systems and Microsoft Office.
• Good communication and problem-solving skills with ability to escalate when needed.
• A Level 3 Food Safety qualification, or willingness to achieve within an agreed period.

Responsibilities

• Leading the packing operation: Planning daily production, allocating labour, coordinating line activities and achieving targets.
• Food safety & quality: Maintaining hygiene, GMP, allergen management, traceability and contamination prevention.
• Technical compliance: Overseeing labeling, coding, product checks, weight control and packaging integrity.
• Team leadership: Coaching and developing colleagues, ensuring training and addressing performance issues.
• Driving performance: Monitoring output, waste, downtime and losses, driving efficiency improvements.
• Health & safety: Ensuring safe practices, PPE use, machinery checks and cleaning schedules.
• Problem-solving: Investigating non-conformances and implementing corrective actions.

Technical & Packing Operations Supervisor

Location: Darton, Barnsley

Department: Operations / Technical

Hours- 40 hours per week covering the day shift which is 6am-2pm 5 out of 7 days.

Are you an experienced supervisor within food production or packing, with a strong understanding of food safety, quality and technical standards?

We’re looking for a Technical & Packing Operations Supervisor to join our team at Darton, taking responsibility for the safe, compliant and efficient running of our open product packing room.

This is a hands‑on role combining operational leadership with technical responsibility. You’ll lead the day‑to‑day packing operation, support and develop your team, and ensure our products meet the highest standards of food safety, quality and legality.

What you’ll be doing:

• Leading the packing operation: Planning daily production, allocating labour, coordinating line activities and ensuring packing targets are achieved.


• Food safety & quality: Maintaining high standards of hygiene, GMP, allergen management, traceability and contamination prevention within a controlled packing environment.


• Technical compliance: Overseeing labelling, coding, product checks, weight control, packaging integrity and product changeovers, ensuring all products meet the required specifications.


• Team leadership: Coaching and supporting colleagues, ensuring training is completed and addressing any performance or compliance issues.


• Driving performance: Monitoring output, waste, downtime and product giveaway, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce losses.


• Health & safety: Ensuring safe working practices, correct use of PPE, machinery checks and cleaning schedules are followed at all times.


• Problem-solving: Investigating non-conformances and process issues, implementing corrective actions and escalating any concerns around product safety, quality or legality.

You’ll also maintain accurate production and technical records, ensuring documentation is complete and ready for audit, while working closely with our wider Operations and Technical teams.

What we’re looking for:

We’re looking for someone who can combine strong operational leadership with excellent attention to detail and a genuine commitment to food safety.

You’ll ideally have:

• Experience in a supervisory or team leadership role within food production, packing or a similar controlled environment.


• A strong working knowledge of food safety, hygiene, GMP, allergen management, traceability and labelling controls.


• The ability to plan workloads, lead a team and make sound decisions in a fast-paced operational environment.


• Experience working with production or warehouse management systems and Microsoft Office.


• Good communication and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to challenge non-compliant practices and escalating concerns when needed.


• A Level 3 Food Safety qualification, or a willingness to achieve this within an agreed period.

You’ll be organised, proactive and comfortable balancing production demands with the technical standards that keep our products and colleagues safe.

What you need to know:

This role requires flexibility to meet operational needs, including shift working and working across ambient, chilled and frozen environments, potentially down to -20°C. Appropriate PPE will be provided.

When the packing room is not operational, you’ll also support the wider Technical or Operations teams in line with business requirements.
