Job Description

The detail design (water) delivery team is based in Costain's Aviator Way offices in Manchester. The team provides multi-discipline engineering services to the water sector, offering sustainable and efficient solutions. Our water team is a small, growing specialized group within Costain's larger Engineering services team, which covers sectors including Energy, Road, Rail, and Defence. We utilize industry-leading software to deliver cost-effective, BIM-compliant, sustainable, and innovative solutions to water utility clients.

Reporting to the Head of Engineering as Technical Manager, you will lead our water team's engineering and design efforts, providing technical assurance across various clean and wastewater schemes for major water utility providers. Costain is proud to be a leading provider of technical engineering solutions in the UK's water industry. Our services span early contractor involvement, concept studies, outline and detailed design, through to construction and commissioning. This is an exciting opportunity to join Costain's innovative team delivering high-value, efficient solutions to water clients.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical assurance across teams of design managers and discipline engineers from initial need statement through solution development, value engineering, detailed design, and construction support.
• Develop affordable design solutions within project budgets and manage associated risks, communicating effectively throughout the process.
• Build collaborative relationships with clients, design teams, construction staff, and supply chain to promote buildability and efficiency.
• Ensure sustainable design solutions comply with CDM Regulations.
• Ensure designs meet project systems and governance requirements.
• Engage in continuous professional development through networking, conferences, and industry groups.
• Maintain a positive, solution-oriented approach, providing honest feedback.
• Perform additional duties, training, or hours as reasonably required within the role's scope.
• Represent Costain professionally in all internal and external contacts, fostering positive relationships.
• Ensure confidentiality in all work-related matters.

Qualifications

• Experience in technical project delivery within a design-build environment.
• Experience in the Water Treatment Industry.
• Leadership experience managing multidisciplinary design teams.
• Delivery-driven with skills in target setting, managing, and motivating teams to meet objectives.
• Strong technical and management skills.
• Ability to identify and manage project/programme risks and scope changes.
• Degree in Engineering.
• Chartered Engineer status.
