Role Overview

The Technical Manager will be a key member of the Engineering Management Team, providing technical leadership and driving business improvements in a specific area of expertise. They will develop proactive relationships with the Engineering Leadership Team, Design Delivery Managers, Framework Design Managers, Discipline Managers, and external clients. This role supports strategic engineering objectives without being on project-critical paths.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive strategy and add value to Galliford Try, accountable to the Engineering Leadership Team.
  • Respond to business challenges requiring expert attention.
  • Provide specialist advice on discipline-specific, scientific, technical, and engineering principles.
  • Train and develop engineers within your discipline.
  • Communicate ideas effectively to stakeholders, clients, and colleagues, based on application examples or first principles.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Support Technical Governance and Assurance.
  • Act as an internal disruptor and innovator, seeking industry norms and technological advancements.
  • Support external consultancy development as SME.
  • Interface with clients on technical leadership.
  • Assist in work winning and develop industry-wide peer networks.
  • Maintain recognition in your area of expertise.
  • Commit to personal development.
  • Develop and manage relationships, working closely with senior management to understand wider needs, risks, and opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with Galliford Try’s management systems and policies, including SHE, Carbon, Digital, DfMA, and Innovation strategies.
Candidate Profile
  • Subject Matter Expert in a key engineering area.
  • Experience managing design functions internally and externally.
  • Ability to promote best practices and innovation at all levels.
  • Leadership in initiatives and supporting design teams.
  • Critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to prioritize in challenging environments.
  • Commercial awareness and performance management skills.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Engineering degree (MEng, MSc, BEng, BSc) or relevant qualifications.
  • Professional membership is advantageous.
  • Experience with Digital Technologies and Advanced Applications in construction.
  • Proficiency in MS Office tools.
