Technical Manager

Manchester

Permanent £55,000 - £60,000 per annum
Monday to Friday 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Are you an experienced Technical Manager looking to lead a dynamic team and make a real impact in a forward-thinking food manufacturing environment? Our client is looking for a driven and detail-oriented leader to join our Senior Leadership Team and play a key role in upholding their exceptional standards of quality, food safety, and compliance.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Technical Manager will oversee all aspects of the Technical function including Quality Assurance, Specifications, Compliance, and New Product Development (NPD). Your mission will be to maintain our prestigious BRC Grade AA accreditation while ensuring we exceed customer expectations and meet all legal and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead the Technical team across food safety, quality, compliance, hygiene, NPD, and legal functions to achieve business goals and KPIs.
  2. Foster strong cross-functional relationships with Operations, Engineering, Procurement, NPD, and supplier auditing teams.
  3. Provide timely, practical responses to technical queries and challenges.
  4. Oversee and continually improve external customer and third-party audit systems, food safety and quality systems, and hygiene protocols.
  5. Develop, track, and analyse KPIs including customer complaints, audit outcomes, NCs, and supplier performance.
  6. Manage technical contracts, including laboratory testing, pest control, calibration services, and industry memberships.
  7. Monitor microbiological performance and trends across all production stages; take action where necessary.
  8. Champion and oversee food safety training across Technical and Manufacturing teams.
  9. Deliver actionable technical advice with a focus on problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  10. Build proactive relationships with customers, auditors, and enforcement bodies.
  11. Manage the Technical department budget and drive value from all technical operations.
  12. Ensure supplier compliance and due diligence protocols are robust and up to date.
  13. Uphold company standards in line with HACCP, QMS, Health & Safety, and Environmental policies.

What We’re Looking For

You’re a confident leader with a strong technical background in the food industry. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, can juggle competing priorities, and are passionate about food safety and innovation.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  1. Degree or HND/HNC in Food Science, Food Technology, or a related field
  2. Advanced Food Safety and Food Hygiene certifications
  3. Lead Auditor qualified
  4. Train the Trainer certified
  5. Strong knowledge of food safety legislation and HACCP systems
  6. Minimum of 2 years experience leading a Technical function, including QA, Specs, and NPD
  7. Excellent communicator with strong influencing, planning, and analytical skills
