Infrastructure Hosting, is tasked with maintaining, simplifying and evolving our infrastructure estate. IH is on an exciting journey, our vision to drive IT simplification, providing simple cost-effective infrastructure in an easily accessible way, ensuring service and resilience is front and centre to what we do.

As we continue this journey, we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic infrastructure lead to provide overall technical direction for the value stream, building and owning our short to mid-term roadmap and ensuring alignment across our hosting and architecture groups.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our Swindon office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Head of Infrastructure Hosting you’ll be expected to take accountability for the lifecycle of the infrastructure technology stack within our control, collaborating with the tech tower leads and architecture to define and own the short to mid-term roadmap and investment plan, ensuring that we remain within risk and service level tolerance and are delivering capabilities fit for the future of the org.

You will work across peers in the wider business, making sure that roadmaps and delivery priorities across IH align and are delivering value against the overall strategic aims of the organisation, all whilst keeping us safe.

You will use your experience, commercial acumen, and people skills to influence the architectural strategy, to ensure it relevant and is deliverable in a prompt, cost-effective manner.

You will be the oversee the guardrails and patterns delivered within the tech towers ensuring they are of quality, are accurately maintained, and kept within governance.

You will be the top point for technical escalation within networks, supplying and seeking guidance as appropriate, to ensure that the teams can deliver.

You will represent IH at technology interlocks, ensuring our direction is well understood and that we understand the direction of other technology teams.

On day 1 this will be an individual contributor role; however, this may evolve as we grow the capability so you should be prepared to take on people management in the future.

About you
  • Been there, got the t-shirt! You will have a career background that has evolved through a technical discipline (preferably through implementation and design) in the infrastructure space towards a leadership role. You will demonstrably have the confidence to make decisions and the humility to change course when needed.
  • You’ll be a natural collaborator, able to bring people together behind a common goal.
  • You’ll be a tech evangelist but with realism, you understand that sometimes good enough is good enough!
  • You’ll be a constant learner, open to new ideas and new ways of doing things.
  • You’ll be able to demonstrate commercial acumen and the ability to build business cases, you’ll have a strong sense of how to measure and predict value realisation across investment decisions.
  • You’ll be comfortable presenting to technical and non-technical audiences alike, including C-suite and audit interaction.
  • You’ll have broad technical knowledge across infrastructure areas, understanding data centres, private and hybrid cloud environments and other on-premises technologies such as:
  • Virtual environment, VMWare, Broadcom VCF, NSX

  • Infrastructure tooling including batch processing and file transfer capability
  • Storage and backup infrastructure
