Job summary

Mint Selection, London-based, is seeking a seasoned Technical Lead for a major UK battery energy storage project. You will own the technical workstream from requirements through to contract award, coordinating bidders and stakeholders across engineering, grid interfaces, and safety standards.

The role requires a degree in Electrical Engineering or related field and substantial BESS experience, with a focus on procurement, evaluation, and risk transfer into contracts.

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or Energy Engineering.
• Significant experience in utility-scale BESS projects.
• Experience leading or supporting a BESS tender from spec to award.
• Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery tech, PCS/inverters, EMS/SCADA, MV/HV and grid interfaces.
• Experience preparing Employer’s Requirements and tender docs.
• Strong understanding of BESS performance metrics like capacity and degradation.
• Experience reviewing BESS supplier proposals and warranties.
• Strong commercial awareness translating technical risks into contractual protections.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.

Responsibilities

• Act as principal technical point of contact throughout the BESS tender and procurement process.
• Develop and finalise the Employer’s Requirements and technical specifications for the BESS package.
• Manage technical clarifications and coordinate discussions with bidders and project stakeholders.
• Lead the technical evaluation of tender submissions, including compliance reviews and deviation assessments.
• Review battery technology, PCS/inverters, EMS/SCADA, MV/HV systems, grid connection interfaces and balance-of-plant requirements.
• Assess proposed system performance, including capacity, efficiency, availability, degradation and augmentation.
• Translate technical risks into contract terms, warranties, performance guarantees and testing requirements.
• Prepare technical evaluation reports and provide clear recommendations to senior project stakeholders.
• Support the handover of the awarded package into the delivery and construction phase.

Mint Selection are partnered with a leading organisation within the energy sector to recruit an experienced BESS Technical Lead for a major UK battery energy storage project.

The position will take ownership of the technical workstream throughout a competitive BESS procurement process, from developing the technical requirements and managing bidder clarifications through to tender evaluation, contract negotiation and award.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced battery storage professional to play a key role in the development of a significant UK energy infrastructure project.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the principal technical point of contact throughout the BESS tender and procurement process.
• Develop and finalise the Employer’s Requirements and technical specifications for the BESS package.
• Manage technical clarifications and coordinate technical discussions with bidders and project stakeholders.
• Lead the technical evaluation of tender submissions, including compliance reviews, deviation assessments and comparison of proposed solutions.
• Review battery technology, PCS/inverters, EMS/SCADA, MV/HV systems, grid connection interfaces and balance-of-plant requirements.
• Assess proposed system performance, including capacity, efficiency, availability, degradation and augmentation.
• Review technical proposals relating to thermal management, fire safety, system controls and product certification.
• Evaluate supplier capability, technical track record, manufacturing capacity, supply chain and proposed delivery programme.
• Translate technical risks into appropriate contract terms, warranties, performance guarantees and testing requirements.
• Support negotiations relating to the BESS supply, installation and long-term service agreements.
• Coordinate technical input from engineering, grid, HSE, planning, commercial, legal and finance stakeholders.
• Prepare technical evaluation reports and provide clear recommendations to senior project stakeholders.
• Support the handover of the awarded package into the delivery and construction phase.

Experience Required

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Engineering or a closely related discipline.
• Significant experience working on utility-scale BESS projects.
• Demonstrable experience leading or supporting a major BESS tender or procurement process from specification through to contract award.
• Strong technical knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology, PCS/inverters, EMS/SCADA, MV/HV systems and grid-connected infrastructure.
• Experience preparing Employer’s Requirements, technical specifications and tender evaluation documentation.
• Strong understanding of BESS performance requirements, including capacity, efficiency, degradation, augmentation, availability and testing.
• Experience assessing proposals from established BESS OEMs and system integrators.
• Knowledge of relevant BESS safety, fire and product certification standards.
• Experience with technical due diligence, owner’s engineering or developer-side project delivery would be highly advantageous.
• Experience reviewing BESS supply agreements, EPC contracts, warranties and long-term service agreements would be beneficial.
• Strong commercial awareness with the ability to translate technical risks into contractual protections.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
