Highways Structures Technician – Grade 5

Join Manchester City Council's Highways Service team as a Highways Structures Technician. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to major projects aligned with the Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 and National Transport Strategies. The Highways Service in Manchester has a key role to play in the evolution of our city, ensuring our structural assets are maintained to be high-quality, safe, and sustainable. The Council’s stock of highway bridges (900nr) are maintained to a standard of inspection that meets or exceeds the risk-based interval requirements for the Inspection of Highway Structures. Day-to-day of the role:

  • Assist in developing technical schemes that meet current standards and specifications, ensuring compliance with legal and statutory requirements.
  • Prepare technical designs, contract documents, and reports for various projects, keeping line management informed of progress.
  • Liaise with internal and external colleagues, consultants, agencies, and stakeholders to ensure effective project delivery.
  • Participate in the planning, organisation, and implementation of projects and programmes of work.
  • Conduct site inspections of highway structures and supervise both internal and external contractors.
  • Implement health and safety procedures, including adherence to CDM regulations 2015.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • BTec Higher in Civil Engineering or a similar qualification, complemented by relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of effectively conveying information across various platforms to a diverse audience.
  • Analytical skills with an understanding of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Model Contract for Highway Works, and CDM 2015 Regulations.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to devise creative solutions and make informed decisions.
  • Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Financial management understanding, particularly in relation to design and construction cost implications.
