Job summary

ByDesign Secure is seeking an experienced Technical Editor to join our architecture, engineering and software teams in the UK. The role focuses on evaluating logic, structure and readability of deeply technical documents and translating complex codebases, API structures and security protocols into clear manuals and guides.

You will collaborate with engineers and writers, ensuring documentation is accurate, accessible and aligned with internal standards across release cycles and secure technology

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3+ years editing or writing in software development, cybersecurity, or tech infrastructure sectors.
• Ability to read, understand, and critique documentation involving code fragments, system architectures, or technical APIs.
• Familiarity with Markdown, GitLab, Confluence or Jira.

Responsibilities

• Partner with engineers, architects and technical writers to clarify technical logic and fill documentation gaps.
• Review and polish technical guides, design documentation, release notes, and API docs for structure, precision and tone.
• Maintain internal style guides and templates to align with industry best practices.
• Track document revisions and manage publishing pipelines within agile sprints and version control.
• Provide constructive, diplomatic feedback to authors to streamline the documentation lifecycle.

About the Opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced and collaborative Technical Editor to work closely with our architecture, engineering and software development teams. This is not simply a proofreading role: you will evaluate the logic, structure and readability of deeply technical documents and help ensure complex information is accurate, clear and accessible.

You’ll act as a collaborative partner to engineers, architects and technical writers, helping translate complex codebases, API structures and security protocols into seamless, accurate manuals and guides.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Team Collaboration: Partner directly with software engineers, architects, and technical writers to clarify technical logic and fill documentation gaps.
• Edit and Refine: Review and polish technical guides, design documentation, release notes, and API documentation for structural flow, precision, and tone.
• Enforce & Build Standards: Maintain and develop our internal style guides and templates to align with industry best practices.
• Manage Agile Workflows: Track document revisions and handle publishing pipelines within our active sprint cycles and version control systems.
• Empower Writing Teams: Provide constructive, diplomatic feedback to document authors to help streamline our technical documentation lifecycle.

What You’ll Bring

• Team-First Experience: Proven experience working inside or alongside software development teams within an Agile, ‘cloud first’, DevSecOps environment.
• Technical Literacy: Ability to confidently read, understand, and critique documentation involving code fragments, system architectures, or technical APIs.
• Industry Background: Minimum of [3+ years] of experience (ideally within central government) editing or writing in the software development, cybersecurity, or tech infrastructure sectors.
• Modern Tooling: Familiarity with modern documentation stacks (such as Markdown, GitLab, Confluence or Jira).
• Communication Precision: Exceptional communication skills with a proven track record of offering actionable, collaborative feedback to developers.

Bonus Points For

• Existing UK Government Security Clearance (SC or above).
• Experience working within central government.
• Experience working within cybersecurity, secure technology or highly regulated environments.
• Experience editing or producing API, software engineering, architecture or security documentation.
