Technical Director - Rail Structures & Bridges

A well-established engineering consultancy in Glasgow is looking for a Technical Director with extensive experience in rail and bridge design. The successful candidate will be a Chartered Engineer with a strong background in leading technical teams and overseeing the delivery of complex infrastructure projects. The role will involve acting as Contractor's Responsible Engineer (CRE) on rail projects and providing guidance across a range of schemes, including flood prevention and other civil works.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to engineers, focusing on chartered engineers and developing future technical specialists.
  • Provide technical leadership on bridge and rail infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with standards and best practices.
  • Act as CRE on rail and bridge projects, overseeing design, risk assessments, and safety/quality assurance.
  • Approve and check designs and technical documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare tender documents and manage the tendering process to secure new projects.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and stakeholders to expand the company's portfolio.
  • Manage diverse projects including railway networks, bridges, and civil schemes like flood prevention.
  • Ensure technical standards are met and improve project delivery procedures.
  • Review and approve designs, calculations, and technical documents.
  • Support the professional development of engineers through guidance and mentorship.
  • Drive business development efforts leveraging industry contacts.
  • Manage multiple projects, budgets, and timelines effectively.

Experience required:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng, MICE, MIStructE, or equivalent).
  • Extensive experience in bridge design and rail infrastructure projects.
  • Proven CRE experience with a strong understanding of regulations and standards.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Business development and client management experience is desirable.
  • A civil engineering background, especially in flood prevention, is advantageous but not essential.
